Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to give you experience in working with Excel to analyze data retrieved from the Internet. You will need to identify a source of data on the internet, enter the data into an Excel Worksheet, and perform a series of tasks. You should have a minimum of 20 records and at least 5 fields of information.
Once you have located your data, enter your data into a worksheet. You may be able to paste it in directly from the Internet, or you may have to type it in yourself (sorry!). Perform the following tasks, once you have entered your data:
-
Add appropriate headings for the columns and for each of the numerical values (percents, dates, etc.). Just a hint -- wait until you are completely done to center your title across the cells.
- Change the column width to fit the data.
- Calculate the means for your data. Calculate only means on columns that are appropriate (numerical data). Place the means in cells that are shaded and bordered.
Use a textbox to explain what your means reveal.
- Change your data in some way using an arithmetic operation (add a value or a percentage, subtract). Place this calculation in a different column and label it appropriately.
- Using a comment, provide the following information: What did you change on your data and why? (e.g., I changed the number of hits because I was interested in determining the effects of a batter getting one extra hit every series on his batting average).
- Copy your data to a second worksheet, but still within the same workbook. Use Autofilter to answer two questions about your data and use a comment or textbox to explain what the criteria were(For example, if you have a database of teacher salaries by state, you may want to find out what are the top five states for salaries).
- Use an IF statement to examine specific conditions in one of your fields (For example, if the amount of sodium in a sports bar is above 25 grams, it is unacceptable). Use a textbook or commment to explain what was your IF statement and why did you choose it.
- Create a column or bar chart for your data, making sure that all elements of the chart are labeled appropriately. Place it as a separate chart in your workbook and enhance the plot or series of your chart in some way.
- Create an appropriate pie chart for your data. Make sure all the elements of the chart are labeled appropriately. Place it as an object in your worksheet (it will appear on the same sheet as your data).
- Label all your worksheet tabs (you should have three tabs: the data sheet, the autofilter worksheet, and a chart worksheet).
- On the original data worksheet, list two questions that could be answered as a result of your data analysis. Use a comment or textbox to do this.
