Student Insurance

Ithaca College requires all undergraduate students enrolled for a minimum of 6 hours  and all graduate students enrolled in a minimum of 3 hours to have health insurance.  We have contracted with UnitedHealthCare StudentResources, a company that markets health insurance to hundreds of colleges and universities, for a student injury and sickness insurance policy for the 2011-2012 year.  The policy they have designed is underwritten by United HealthCare Insurance Company of New York. It provides sensible coverage at a reasonable cost, supplements the benefits available through the Hammond Health Center, and may complement the insurance coverage or managed care plan you already have.

The charge for the basic plan, which began August 15, 2011 and provides a full 12 months of coverage, is $575.00/year per student and was included on your bursar bill.  IF YOU DO NOT DESIRE COVERAGE AND DID NOT WAIVE THE FEE EARLIER THIS FALL, YOU MAY SUBMIT A WAIVER ONLINE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE A $356.00 CREDIT FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER SEMESTER INSURANCE FEE.  The online waiver system will be available from November 29, 2011 to January 31st, 2012. You may submit the waiver online by logging onto HomerConnect any time during this period. At the main menu, click "Student Financial Aid and Residential Life" and then select "Health Services". When submitting a waiver you will be required to enter proof of your current insurance, so have that information available.

Consider the following in making your decision:

  • All covered medical expenses billable from the Student Health Center will be paid at 100%
  • If you do not waive, the student health insurance will become your primary insurance and any other coverage (ie. your parents plan) will be secondary.
  • Your current insurance may not cover the types of expenses that college students most often incur, like outpatient referrals, or may only cover them after a deductible or co-payment; this plan can help cover those expenses.
  • If your current coverage is through an HMO or PPO out of the Ithaca area, local services in Ithaca may be limited or may be charged to you at a higher, non-preferred rate.
  • Coverage through parents' policies may end once a student reaches a certain age.

IMPORTANT:  If you wish to decline the student injury and sickness plan, you must submit an online waiver before January 31st, 2012 and you will receive $356.00 credit for the spring/summer period.  AFTER THIS DATE THE WAIVERS WILL CLOSE AND THE HEALTH INSURANCE FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE!
