Want to be a force for change in a time of environmental challenges? Students in our environmental studies program develop the analytic tools and broad knowledge base necessary to become leaders in this burgeoning field.

Environmental studies majors learn to critically assess environmental concerns and explore the interplay among economic, political, and ethical issues in ecology. In your junior year you'll be required to build on this foundation by designing your own concentration. You might examine the intersection of environment and culture, for example, or study the economics of ecologically responsible business practices.

This program offers exceptional research opportunities with faculty who are recognized scholars, and it offers internships in Ithaca and around the globe. Our students have recently studied diverse topics such as the safety of mercury in tuna; the feasibility of wind power on campus; green roofs and root cellars; environmental and social justice in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina; landscaping practices and environmental benefits of lawn alternatives; and the long-term environmental impacts of the Iraqi invasion.

Graduates may pursue advanced science degrees or careers in areas such as aviation conservation, habitat management, or environmental research. If you're passionate about environmental policymaking, this program provides the tools to make a positive difference in the world.
