Tutoring Resources

Students requesting tutoring assistance should first contact the professor or individual department offering the course.  Listed below are some additional options and resources.

Academic Support Services for Students with Disabilities

The Office of Academic Support Services offers tutoring services for students with disabilities.  Contact the office (322A Smiddy, ext. 4-1257 or acssd@ithaca.edu) to fill out a tutoring request form.  The office will provide you with a list of qualified student tutors for you to contact on a fee for service basis. Help is also available for students who would like assistance with time management skills.

Intercollegiate Athletics


Student athletes should contact the NCAA Life Skills Coordinator.  Provide the name of the course, name of the professor, and a general idea of the degree of difficulty you are having.  You will be given the name of a tutor to call that is hired to tutor student-athletes.

Multicultural Affairs

ALANA and first year HEOP students should contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs (101 Towers Concourse, ext. 4-3381) regarding free tutorials.  Professionals are available 6 days a week and evenings for students having difficulties in general education subjects (e.g. writing, math, economics, chemistry, biology, communications, Spanish, etc.).  Workshops are also available for first year students who would like assistance with time management skills.

It is recommended that you contact the department office of the individual class that you are taking. They may have additional tutoring options available. 

School of Business

Accounting

Students interested in private tutoring in either Financial Accounting or Management Accounting are encouraged to contact the Office of Academic Support Services for a list of qualified tutors.  Each student tutor has received a B+ or higher in the respective course and is available on a fee for service basis.  Students will charge no more than $10 per hour (negotiable).

Clinical Health Studies/Physical Therapy

Students having difficulty with courses offered through the department of Physical Therapy should contact their course’s graduate assistant and/or professor for assistance.

Community Health Education

Students enrolled in courses in the department of Speech-Language Pathology should contact their course’s graduate assistant regarding tutorials.

Student tutor available Thursday evenings 6:00-8:00 PM in Center for Natural Sciences 163.  Review sessions prior to tests will be announced in class.

Computer Science


COMP-17100 Principles of Computing Science I
A student tutor is available Sunday, Tuesday & Thursday from 7:00 – 9:00 PM; Monday and Wednesday 8:00 – 10:00 PM in Williams Hall, Room 303.

Economics

Student tutoring for Principles of Micro and Macroeconomics.  For information contact Tina Bennett in the Department of Economics, Muller Center 425 (607 274-3200).


History


Tutoring services are available from History Club members for students in 100-level courses.  Contact the History Department, 607 274-3303 for details.

Mathematics

For students needing help with math courses MATH-10000 through MATH-24400 student tutors are available in the Evening Math Help Room (Williams 310) from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Monday and Thursday evenings.

The Math Tutorial Room (Williams 304) is available Monday-Friday for help in math courses MATH-10000 through MATH-24400.  Both math faculty & student tutors are available for help.  See schedule of times on Williams 304 door: Monday & Tuesday 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM; Wednesday and Thursday 10:00 AM – 12:00 noon and 1:00 – 3:00 PM; and Friday 10:00 – 12:00 noon.  Additions or changes in hours will be posted on the door of Williams 304.

Modern Languages and Literature

A list of student tutors is posted in the Language Center, Gannett Center, 3rd floor.  Please contact the Language Center Supervisor at 607 274-3295.

Physics

PHYS-10100, Introduction to Physics I (all sections)
Tutoring services are available Wednesdays from 2:00 – 8:00 PM, Central for Natural Sciences 206.

Psychology

Individual tutoring is available in most courses: consult with professor of the course.  Students in their freshman year specifically are encouraged to see their professor for tutoring information if their grade drops to a C- or below.

Writing

The Writing Center, located in 228 Park Hall, 607 274-3315, is available to all IC students who seek assistance on a first-come, first-serve basis; appointments are advisable.  The center is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday through Thursday 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM.

Writers at all levels may participate in one-to-one conferences to work on effective strategies for all aspects of the writing process.  The Writing Center offers these services in all disciplines- Humanities & Sciences, Business, Health, Communications, and Music.

The Department of Writing also features two Writing Resource Rooms located in Williams 313 (Monday through Thursday 5:30 – 11:00 PM) and Friends 103 (Wednesday 8:00 - 11:00 PM, Thursday and Sunday 7:00 – 11:00 PM).  These networked computer labs are staffed by Writing and Technology Consultants who can assist students at all levels with writing assignments, as well as with resumes and cover letters.  No appointments necessary.

School of Music

Tutoring services are available for students with difficulties in music theory and sight-singing classes by the Department of Music Theory, History, and Composition in the School of Music.  Students are encouraged to contact The Office of Academic Support Services for the names of qualified tutors who have attained excellent skills in these areas.

Aging Studies

Students enrolled in courses offered through the Gerontology Institute should contact Ms. Pamela Mayberry, Associate  Director/Academic Program Coordinator of the Gerontology institute (274-1607 or pmayberry@ithaca.edu).  She will provide students with the name of an upper-level gerontology student who can help.
