About Tutoring Services

AES seeks to further cultivate a passion for academic excellence in Ithaca students. It is also our goal to enhance the learning outcomes of those who use our services.

We use a student-centered approach to providing services, accommodating those who wish to work independently and providing opportunities for others who prefer to work in groups.  We partner with academic departments on campus to ensure that you receive a breadth of opportunities to achieve your aspirations for high grades and scholastic achievement.

AES tutorial services are free of charge to Ithaca College students and are offered in two locations: 110 and 130 Towers Concourse.  Many academic departments also provide free tutoring as well, although some may charge students for one-on-one services.  It is our hope that you take advantage of any and all tutorial services on campus.  Remember, too, that your course instructors are your first and best resource.  AES services are intended to supplement, not to replace, your professor's guidance and instruction.

  • What are the goals of tutoring, and how can tutoring help me?

The goals of tutoring are to improve your understanding of specific course information, and to provide key strategies that will help you become an effective independent learner.

A tutor will not complete your assignments or projects for you. Again, the purpose of tutoring is to guide you through and explain concepts so that you can obtain the skills to complete your assignments on your own.

  • My grades were great in high school so I don’t really need remedial services such as tutoring.

Tutoring is designed for all students and is not a remediation activity. In fact, high-achieving students often use tutorial services! This is exactly why they are high-achieving students!  Further, as you transition from high school to college, you will find that you may need to make some adjustments in the way you approach studying and learning. In college you will be stretched to think and acquire knowledge in new and exciting ways from a variety of perspectives.  Academic support services -- such as tutoring -- are one of the most effective means of advancing in one’s specified coursework and field of study.

  • Okay, so how do I prepare for my tutoring sessions?

Bring any relevant materials such as textbooks, worksheets, notes, handouts and a list of questions or problems to address. This will help guide the tutorial session and will ensure that your main concerns are met. Most sessions are ½ hour to 1 hour in length, so it's vital for you to be prepared.  Make the best use of your time as well as your tutor's.
