Tutoring Services

a plus

The goals of Academic Enrichment Services (AES) tutorial services are to further cultivate a passion for academic, professional, and personal excellence in Ithaca students; and to enhance the learning outcomes of those who use our services.

We use a student-centered approach to providing services, accommodating those who wish to work independently and providing opportunities for others who prefer to work in groups.  We partner with academic departments on campus to ensure that you receive a breadth of opportunities to achieve your aspirations for high grades and scholastic achievement.

AES tutorial services are free of charge and are offered in two locations: 101 and 130 Towers Concourse.  Most academic departments also provide free tutoring as well although some may charge students for one-on-one services.  It is our hope that you take advantage any and all tutorial services on campus.

  • What is the purpose of tutoring and how can it help me?

The purpose of tutoring is to help you learn specific information for a specific course, and to guide you to the point at which you can become an independent learner. The tutor will be able to clarify specific points from your lectures and readings; and they should be able to share specific strategies that can help you retain the information. The tutor’s goal is to provide you with the necessary skills and tools to enable you to become an independent learner.

A tutor will not complete your assignments or projects for you. Again, the purpose of tutoring is to guide you through and explain concepts so that you can obtain the skills to complete your assignments on your own.

  • My grades were great in high school so I don’t really need remedial services such as tutoring.

Tutoring is designed for all students and is not a remediation activity. In fact, high achieving students use tutorial services! This is exactly why they are high achieving students!  Further, as you transition from high school to college, you will find that you may need to make some adjustments in the way you approach studying and learning. In college you will be stretched to think and acquire knowledge in new and exciting ways from a variety of perspectives.  Academic support services such as tutoring is one of the most effective means of advancing in one’s specified coursework and field of study.

  • Okay, so how do I prepare for my tutoring sessions?

Bring any relevant materials such as text books, worksheets, notes, handouts and a list of questions or problems to address. This will help guide the tutorial session and will ensure that your main concerns are met. Most sessions are ½ hour in length, so being prepared to get right to your issues is vital and the best use of both your time as well as the tutors.
