SCHOOL OF MUSIC PERSONNEL EVALUATION COMMITTEE PROCEDURES FOR TENURE AND PROMOTION

Review of the candidate by the School of Music Personnel Evaluation Committee is the first level of assessment in the formal tenure review. Those procedures outlined below will direct the committee's review. The dean of the School of Music will convene the committee, discuss the procedures to be followed, and provide the committee with the candidate's completed personnel folder.

A. Review Procedures

The information and material presented in the candidate's personnel folder will be the basis for the review. Using as a guide the general criteria for evaluation (see sections II and III of the "School of Music Policies and Procedures for Faculty Appointment, Evaluation, Tenure, Promotion and Renewal," available from the office of the dean of the School of Music) and the specific criteria and sources of evidence presented in Appendix F (of the aforementioned "School of Music Policies and Procedures for Faculty Appointment, Evaluation, Tenure, Promotion and Renewal) each committee member will review thoroughly all information and materials in the folder. This review will be private and confidential; there shall be no preliminary discussion of the material among members of the committee or with other faculty.

The committee as a whole will then discuss its separate findings. If the committee finds that the information is incomplete, inaccurate, or inconsistent, it may solicit the necessary information from appropriate faculty members or administrators. The candidate must be advised of this intent in writing and of the reasons for that request. The candidate may respond in writing to the solicited information and submit additional material relating to the area of the committee's concern. All such solicited information and responses will be reviewed thoroughly to insure accurate and complete consideration of the issues. The committee will not deal with questions of institutional need.

B. Committee Recommendation

When all information and materials have been thoroughly considered, the committee will render a decision by written ballot. It will then report its findings in writing to the dean. This report will state the committee vote numerically and include the details supporting its decision. All information used as the basis for a negative recommendation will be stated in the report in order to enable the candidate to respond to specific issues. Minority committee views will be included.
