Competition
To be eligible to represent the College in an intercollegiate event, each student-athlete must meet the following requirements:
7.6.2.2 Student-Athlete Academic Guidelines
Academic Advising
Each student-athlete must have a faculty advisor from within the student-athlete's major department. These advisors are available to assist students with academic planning and course scheduling, however, the ultimate responsibility for fulfilling all academic requirements rests with the individual student-athlete. Regarding general education requirements, you should seek the advice of your major advisor since some general education courses are prerequisites for majors and some satisfy requirements in the major.
Academic Tutoring
Academic tutoring is available through certain departments on campus, i.e., math, business, accounting, anatomy, writing center, etc.). The various departments offer these tutoring sessions and professors should inform you of these times and days.
If you need individual tutoring, the Office of Intercollegiate Athletics will assist you in finding a tutor. Simply call the NCAA LifeSkills Coordinator and give the name of the course, name of the professor, and a general idea of the degree of difficulty that you are having. You will be given the name of a tutor to call that is hired to tutor student-athletes.
If you are assigned to workstudy and would like to tutor, please see your coach. You will be put in touch with the NCAA LifeSkills Coordinator and be asked to fill out a form that will list the courses you can tutor. Then you will be recommended and student-athletes will be calling you to establish times for tutoring sessions.
Policy: Course Credit
If you intend to try out for a specific fall, winter or spring team, you should bring your plans and the five-digit code number for your sport to the attention of your academic advisor at the time you advance register for that semester. The advisor will try to keep free the 4-7 PM practice time.
Everyone who enrolls for a varsity sport will originally be enrolled for 0.0 credits. The following procedure will be utilized for those students who wish to receive 0.5 credits for participation.
1. A list of all students who signed up for each sport will be distributed to each coach.
2. Student must notify the coach if the student wants to receive 0.5 credits or 0.0 credit.
3. If 0.5 credits are requested, the student's name is highlighted and initialed.
4. The complete information list is to be sent to the Registrar's Office.
5. Any changes after this time must be accommodated utilizing the drop/add procedure.
6. A grade will not be assessed...Pass/Fail Only.
Academic Honesty
The College expects students to be honest in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is viewed as an ethical issue and is a violation of the principles of justice and personal responsibility. In particular, students must refrain from plagiarism, cheating, and collusion in connection with examinations. They must fully acknowledge all sources and assistance received in work submitted to a faculty member for evaluation.
In the event of academic dishonesty in class assignments or examinations, the student will be subject to the judicial process of the College.
Extra Benefits
The receipt of unauthorized awards, benefits, or expenses by student-athletes is an area of extreme vulnerability for almost any institution. The following NCAA legislation directly relates to the issue of extra benefits:
