My teaching interests include Statistics, Research Methods, and the History of Psychology. In all of these areas, I try to integrate elements of psychology within the social and cultural context of the times. In the quantitative courses, this involves having students write about the impact of research on society and on the way that our culture influences the research we do.
In the History course, we learn about the social pressures that led to the development of various ideas and on the role of psychology on cultural, social, and political issues. I encourage students to draw parallels among the ideas that have developed intervals, as represented in books and journals; the end products are two papers that compare and contrast the nature of psychology at different times.

Note: I cannot vouch for all of these sites. I know that some are reliable and trustworthy. In fact, some of them were created by friends of mine. There are some that appear legitimate but that I haven't checked out in detail. Please review the information critically.

Basketball: I play Lunchbox basketball at noon every day I can. You can take a look at me during a game, as portrayed in The Ithacan. Note: The figure caption says that I was "trying" to dribble around the defender. It wasn't "trying." I left him in the dust.
Gardening: I have a garden of about 800 square feet that provides tomatoes, potatoes, onions, garlic, cucumbers beets, beans, and basil. Unfortunately, I often wind up sharing it with hungry dee and rabbits.
My Children: My daughter, Agatha, has just finished her doctoral degree in Women and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. She was awarded a dissertation fellowship by the American Association of University Women. She has co-edited a book, and she and I co-authored a book (for which we are writing a second edition). She graduated from Carleton College cum laude with a bachelor's degree in classical languages. She has two Master's degrees, one in Women's Studies from the University of Arizona and one in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University. When she was a freshman in high school, she finished fifth in New York state in the 400 meters.
My son, Simon, is a musician; his groups are The Fishermen Three and The Wowz. His tours include England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia. He wrote the music for the documentary The City Dark ; it was screened at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. He won the juried award for the best musical score for a documentary. His group also wrote the music for the documentary King Corn and is working on other such music, including Truck Farm (see Episode 1 and Episode 2). He also does technical writing and web design. He graduated cum laude from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in history. In high school, he was in New York's All-State Concert band and was named to the All-State Soccer Team.
My wife, Linda, is a reference librarian at the Finger Lakes Library System. She grew up in New York City and graduated from City College with a bachelor's degree in psychology. We met in graduate school at the City University of New York and were married on the night that Richard Nixon announced that he was going to resign his presidency. She has a Master's in Library Sciences from Catholic University in Washington, DC.
My activities include work within Division 2 of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. This division address issues relevant to the teaching of psychology and offers support and services to teachers of psychology at all levels.
