Garry Thomas (Anthopology) and Jason Hamilton (Biology) presented a poster entitled "Towards Sustainability as 'Second
Nature' at Ithaca College: The Multiplier Effect of an NSF Curriculum Development Grant," at a conference on "Sustainability
and Higher Education," co-sponsored by Education for Sustainability's Western Network and Second Nature in Portland, OR,
October, 2004.
The poster was co-authored by other members of the NSF Applying Science to Sustainability grant coordinating team,  Susan Allen-Gil (Biology), Liz Walker (Director of EcoVillage), and Elan Shapiro (Educational and Outreach Director of EcoVillage).  The conference focused on the connections between sustainability and higher education - from teaching and research to campus operations, facilities, and community outreach - and explored how colleges and universities could be transformed into models of sustainability.  Find more information about this conference and sponsoring organizations at Education for Sustainability Western Network http://www.efswest.org/

Abstract:

Several molluscs have been shown to alternate between a non-adhesive trail mucus and a similar gel that forms a strong glue.  The major structural difference between the two secretions is the presence of specific proteins in the adhesive mucus.  Similarly, the present study identifies such proteins from the glue of the slug Arion subfuscus and the land snail Helix aspersa.  To investigate the role these proteins play in adhesion, the proteins were isolated from the adhesive mucus of different molluscs and added to commercial polymer solutions.  The effect was observed qualitatively, and quantified using a dynamic rheometer.  The isolated proteins triggered gelling or visible stiffening of agar, pectin and polygalacturonic acid.  The effect was stronger to more negatively charged polymers.  The effect of the proteins was concentration dependent with an optimal concentration of 1-1.5 mg/ml, and was weakened when their structure changed.  Other proteins and carbohydrates found in the adhesive mucus had no clear mechanical effect on gels.  These findings show that the addition of these proteins to large, anionic polymers plays a central role in the formation of a glue from a mucus-like secretion.  Such a mechanism may be common among invertebrates, and it may guide biomimetic approaches in the development of glues and gels.

ABSTRACT: In an effort to increase student engagement and therefore student learning, an advanced genetics course was developed in which traditional lectures were eliminated.  Instead, students were required to complete reading assignments before each class meeting, and those readings were then the topic of group discussion.  Assigned readings alternated between text assignments and papers from the primary literature.  Students were made accountable for their own preparation by the administration of a quiz at the start of each class.  Group discussion of the topics engaged students in the learning process and readministration of the quiz at the end of class allowed them to benefit from the group interaction and understanding.  Interspersing text readings and primary literature led to student understanding of how genetic knowledge is acquired and interpreted, and how experimental detail leads to the construction of general models.
