The Talloires Declaration Last semester, some of our members worked hard making presentations in classes about sustainability and the Talloires Declaration in their classes. We gathered around 2000 signatures in support of the Declaration. The Ithaca College Planning and Priorities Committee heard the student voice, and after much discussion, recommended that President Williams sign the document for the college. The Declaration will be (was) signed Tues. February 21 at 11:15 am. To see what the next steps are check out the links or download the declaration on our “learn” page if you would like to know more. Pedestrian Access to and within the Ithaca College campus. We've noticed a lack of sidewalks leading to the campus from the Ithaca Commons. We believe it would be beneficial to bikers and pedestrians to connect our campus with the fabric of the downtown area. This focus group has formed with the goal of making our stretch of 96B safe and accessible for everyone. Wind Energy at IC We are currently organizing a campaign to have the College Purchase renewable wind energy. We are looking into the feasibility of having Wind Turbines on the campus generating some of our energy and purchasing a portion or all of the remaining as wind energy from a local Wind Farm. We have been going into classes with presentations about the importance of renewable energy here on campus. If you support this idea, and would like to have your name on the petition, please e-mail Allison Krasnow, akrasno1@ithaca.edu. Partnership with IC Circle K We are gathering 16 and 20 oz. soda, Aquafina, and Dasani bottles to donate to the Terracycle Plant Food company. The company reuses old bottles to bottle their product, a plant food derived from organic waste. The rebates from these bottles, we will donate to Circle K, who will use them for a charity. Partnership with the Fingerlakes Sierra Club We are collaborating with the group with the group on a couple projects. Last semester we co-hosted an educational hike at the 6-mile creek gorge. Some specialists from the Friends of the Six-Mile Creek came to talk to us about invasive species and the history of the gorge. We are planning on another hike together in the spring with a children’s education aspect. We are also helping the group establish 10 electronics recycling bins in the community. Partnership with SGA The Student Government Association is very support of Sustainability this year. We are working closely with their Sustainability Ad-Hoc and sharing effort on our initiatives and some of theirs. Check out what they are doing at www.ithaca.edu/sga. | ||
