School of Business Students Take Second in Adirondack CupSchool of Business Students Take Second in Adirondack Cup
Nine students from the School of Business teamed up to manage a mock portfolio in The Adirondack Cup competition and took home second place.

The Adirondack Cup, sponsored by the Adirondack Research & Management, Inc., advisor to the Adirondack Small Cap Mutual Fund (ADKSX), is a competition during which college teams competed against each other over six months to build and grow a small cap portfolio of stocks.

The Ithaca College team consisted of; Jackie Branco, Russell Gewehr, Samantha Giraud, Dylan Lee, Cameron Miller, Michael Palermo, Connell Pritchard, Daniel Sottosanti, and Alexander Weaver.

Students from 18 colleges and universities across the Northeast participated in the competition, managing a hypothetical small cap portfolio of stocks valued at $1 million. The goals of the competition, which is in its third year, are to teach students the difference between trading stocks and thinking through their investment decisions for the long term and to help them make appropriate connections in the financial services sector as they prepare to enter the job market.

"I'm delighted that our IC student team placed so well in the Adirondack Cup Competition. It is a testament to the excellent education in financial theory and application that the students have received, including hands on experience in our world class Trading Room. This is a great example of the motivation and hard work of our business students." said Dean Mary Ellen Zuckerman.

According to Adirondack Principal and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Gonick, “The students have grown their network of contacts in the industry as a result of participating in the Adirondack Cup because many of our clients have been actively following the competition, often rooting for the students from the school they graduated from.  This will be extremely helpful as they start their careers.”

“As an Ithaca College alum, I am particularly proud of the Ithaca team,” said Gonick.  “In three years of competition, Ithaca has finished in the top two twice, winning the Adirondack Cup in 2012.  It’s a testament to the fine education the college is providing to its students.”

The Adirondack Small Cap Mutual Fund, an owner-managed fund, has been recognized in 2011 and 2013 by Lipper Inc. as the best small cap value mutual fund in the U.S.

The top five teams were; St. Lawrence University, Ithaca College, Bryn Mawr College, Saunders College of Business at RIT and SUNY Geneseo.   View full final standings here
