Local Green Buildings Open House and Tour, October 4-5
On Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day, tour more than two dozen "green buildings" in the area. Half of the buildings will be open on Saturday and half on Sunday. Our LEED platinum-certified Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise is one of the featured facilities on Sunday, October 5.
This annual Green Buildings Open House -- sponsored by the Ithaca Green Building Alliance and Cornell Cooperative Extension -- is free and open to the public.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to see, firsthand, renewable energy and green building practices at work in our area. Green building involves designing, constructing, or renovating homes, schools, workplaces, and other structures for high performance, human health, and environmental sustainability. This year's Green Building Open House features 27 homes in Tompkins, Tioga, and Schuyler Counties.
Homeowners and/or green-building professionals will be on site to answer questions and describe their buildings' features -- such as energy-efficient appliances, passive solar design, photovoltaics, wind power, salvaged and nontoxic building materials, local lumber, straw-bale construction, and more.
For self-guided tours: local sites, photos, descriptions and maps of the tour sites are in the 2008 Green Building Open House Guide, which is available in hard-copy from Cornell Cooperative Extension (615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca), or you may download the PDF version from the link below.
Organized van tours guided by green-building professionals will be offered for a fee of $10 per person or $15 for two people from the same household. Vans leave the Cooperative Extension at noon, visit four homes, and return by 4:30 p.m. Advance registration is required for van tours, and space is limited to 10 people per van.
