The Final Letter And since my feet are now fast And point away from the past, I'll bid farewell and be down the line. --Bob Dylan, Restless Farewell It's no secret, to those who know me; I don't like Ithaca College. Never have, never will. And as it is with people or things you don't like, when it comes time to leave them behind, you often want to hurt them, to do something to let them know just how they've made you feel all this time. I'd been looking for that outlet for a while, and when we founded Buzzsaw, this, the final column of the final issue of my final year, seemed like just the right opportunity. I was going to take this space and shit on everyone who had made my life harder or worse in my two and a half years at Ithaca. But I'm not going to do that. I could, but why leave with bitterness in my gut? What value does that carry? How does that really make up for anything that happened here? And what's the good in being remembered as so spiteful? There's no value to that. And that realization, I think, is indicative of the maturation process I've gone through in the last two and a half years. The person I was at the end of my freshman year would have done that just. But not now. So, instead, I've elected to thank everyone at the school who's been important, helpful, or simply kind to me during my stay here (family and friends from home excluded. This is an IC-only thing). So, if I forget you, I'm sorry, but I am trying to remember everyone. If you're not on this list, and you think you should be, I probably forgot you. Anyway, thanks to all of you. To the people I'm closest to here, Cole Louison and Sarah Wright. I can't imagine what my life would be without you two. For being my people: Summer Killian, Charna Mamlok, Abby Bertumen, Marissa Tejada, Thom Denick, Meagan Johnson, Art Eliott, Anne Bacon, Dawn Burks, Bob Oswald, Kathryn Cernera, Christine Pratt, Lauren Parker. To the people who have helped steer me right, made me laugh, been there for the fun, known what to say and when to listen: Renee Thibodeau, Vanessa Velez, Diane Del Pozo. The people who my education would be entirely hollow without: Jill Swenson, Sharon Mazzarella, Fred Wilcox, Jules Benjamin, Katherine Kittredge, Richard Brown, Paul MacBride, Ben Crane, Colleen Kattau and Patty Zimmerman. To my music school posse: Suzanne O'Gara, Miles Johnson, Kevin Doherty, and especially Nate Kaiser (thanks for everything). Thanks to the whole Buzzsaw Haircut staff. It'll take up too much space to name you all, but suffice it to say, if you've been involved in Buzzsaw, none of this would be possible without you (especially our advisor, Peter Kareithi). To those that are gone from Ithaca, but not from my life or mind: Bryan Chambala, James Sigman, Kelly Burdick, Bret Holgerson. A lot of the original members of Buzzsaw will be gone when you all return in August. But Buzzsaw won't be. The editors have left the magazine in four very capable sets of hands, who you'll grow to know and love next year. As for the rest of us, well....who knows? Goodbye and Good Luck. --Sam Costello |
