More Matrix by Sam Costello The Matrix is a good movie. Not a great movie, but for what Hollywood usually offers up in the science fiction genre, it's very good. I'm not going to even try to recap the plot, not only because it would take too long, and is too complex, but also because I don't want to spoil what is, to most people, an intriguing film. Suffice it to say, The Matrix is a cyberpunk-style thriller, that will appeal to action fans, as well as science fiction fans. It's shocking that a movie starring Keanu Reeves as anyone other than "Ted" Theodore Logan doesn't suck, but The Matrix does not. Perhaps this is because Reeves' character does not have to be flashy, or deep, or emotional. Perhaps it's because the plot, and the always great Lawrence Fishburne, carry the film. Either way, don't let Mr. No Talent hold you back from seeing this movie. And seeing it is almost reason enough to pay $7.75. Normally I don't go in too much for special effects, but in this movie, they are phenomenal. Usually the effects fail to be impressive in these types of movies, but they are arresting in The Matrix. Every wonderful thing about illustration is captured well in live action here. What more can you ask for? Well, a flawless plot, I guess. There are a few scenes in this film that made me laugh out loud in digust. And these were during some of what were supposed to be tense scenes. That laughter brought me out of the world of the movie, and back into the theater, which was too bad. Despite this, The Matrix is a good movie, and a great warm-up to the upcoming adaption of the cyberpunk bible, Neuromancer. Sam Costello is (insert stupid science fiction joke here). He eagerly awaits Natalie Portman's debut in Star Wars, Episode I. |
