Top Girls- Preview

When Marlene throws a dinner party to celebrate her promotion at the "Top Girls" employment agency, she invites, in a dreamlike opening sequence, Pope Joan, Dull Gret from Pieter Breughel's painting, 19th century explorer Isabella Bird, and other characters from history and art to swap stories about surviving in a man's world. The stories of the historical characters parallel the lives of Marlene's contemporaries. As the story moves through the tangled web of Marlene's career and family relationships, we see that she has learned to be tough and insensitive in order to compete with men.

RACE & IMMIGRATION - CSCRE LECTURE SERIES

Joycelyn Gill-Campbell; organizer; Domestic Workers United (works with immigrants working as maids, servants).

Theme of the Lecture Series:
Given the shifts in the global political economy over the last three decades - including increasing mobility for capital and descreasing mobility for labor, the collapse of national and local economies, stagnant wages, job insecurity, and losses in political and cultural sovereignty - immigration has become an increasingly important site for investigating the intensification of nativism, xenophobia, and gendered racism. This discussion series explores the interlocking systems of oppression made apparent by mass migrations, the criminalization of undocumented workers, militarism, and the expansion of the prison industrial complex. The series also seeks to address immigrants' resistance, resilience and social justice work in light of these new global challenges.

Top Girls

When Marlene throws a dinner party to celebrate her promotion at the "Top Girls" employment agency, she invites, in a dreamlike opening sequence, Pope Joan, Dull Gret from Pieter Breughel's painting, 19th century explorer Isabella Bird, and other characters from history and art to swap stories about surviving in a man's world. The stories of the historical characters parallel the lives of Marlene's contemporaries. As the story moves through the tangled web of Marlene's career and family relationships, we see that she has learned to be tough and insensitive in order to compete with men.

International Development Forum on Food, Politics and Society: Alternative Futures

Public concern about the future of our species' food system surfaces in many forms and arenas. Recent years have demonstrated widespread vulnerability to hunger and malnutrition, competition between food and bio-fuels for land and water, uncertainty about food safety and sustainability of production, and environmental effects of agriculture both near to and far from the farm. Our speakers will raise issues of ethics, movements for alternative food systems, technology, nutrition and risk. The Forum kicks off work on a new Handbook from Oxford University Press on Food, Politics, and Society. Organized by the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD) and co-sponsored by the Polson Institute for Global Development; Department of Government; Cornell Institute for the Social Sciences; and the Development, Governance, and Nature Initiative.

Sigma Iota Epsilon Induction Ceremony

SIGMA IOTA EPSILON MISSION
Sigma Iota Epsilon is both an honorary and professional fraternity. Our overall mission is two-fold: to encourage and recognize scholastic
excellence, and to promote cooperation between the academic and practical aspects of management. Specifically, the goals of SIE are:
• To stimulate interest and achievement in the
field of management;
• To stimulate scholarship in the management
discipline;
• To facilitate contacts between students and
professional managers;
• To recognize individuals who have made
contributions to the field of management;
• To gain recognition of the contribution and
value of scholastic achievement in the
management discipline.
The Greek letters in our name stand for Spoude, Idreia, and Exoche – earnestness, knowledge, and excellence. Our symbol, the Sigma Iota Epsilon key, reminds us of the wisdom and practicality signified by the concepts of creative development, organization, cooperation, and service.
