Peggy R. Williams Difficult Dialogues Symposium

Sheryl WuDunn, the first Asian-American to win a Pulitzer Prize, is a business executive, entrepreneur and best-selling author. With her husband, Nicholas D. Kristof (New York Times), she has co-authored three best-selling books. The most recent is Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide which focuses on the challenges facing women and girls in developing countries and was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Colbert Report and other network television shows. WuDunn will discuss her book (which will be available for purchase at the bookstore this semester and at the event) and engages us in a difficult-to-digest-dialogue focused on such issues as forced prostitution and sex slavery among women and girls. According to Tom Brokaw, “Half the Sky is a passionate and persuasive plea to all of us to rise up and say ‘No more!’ to seventeenth-century abuses to girls and women in the twenty-first century world. This is a book that will pierce your heart and arouse your conscience.” The Half the Sky documentary series will air on October 1-2nd on PBS at 9:00PM. For more information visit http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/half-the-sky.

WuDunn graduated from Cornell University, where she has been a member of the Board of Trustees since 2002, a member of the Board’s Finance Committee, a former co-chair of Board’s Academic Affairs Committee and a former member of the multi-billion dollar endowment’s Investment Committee. She earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and an M.P.A. from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, where she is a former member of its Advisory Council. WuDunn received honorary doctorates from the University of Pennsylvania and Middlebury College.

E-Portfolio Workshop/Professional Talk (register here)

Presented by
Bret Eynon, Dean for Teaching and Learning, LaGuardia Community College, CUNY
Laura Gambino, ePortfolio Initiatives, New Community College, CUNY

How do we help students connect their learning? How do we, as educators, develop pedagogies and practices that advance and deepen integrative learning? Campuses across the country -- from community colleges and research universities to liberal arts colleges -- are experimenting with ways to use electronic student portfolios to support integration. CUNY's LaGuardia Community College has drawn wide recognition as an international leader in this effort. Dr. Bret Eynon, LaGuardia's Dean for Teaching and Learning, will share insights, practices and research data from LaGuardia and other campuses in the national FIPSE-funded Connect to Learning project

Bret Eynon and Laura Gambino will meet with interested faculty for follow-up discussion in the Center for Faculty Excellence, Gannett 316, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Bringing Social Movements into the Classroom: Teaching Beyond Borders (register here)

Presented by:
Beth Harris, Associate Professor
Peyi Soyinka-Airewele, Associate Professor
Department of Politics

As education becomes more corporatized and bureaucratized, it becomes increasingly important to develop pedagogies that think outside of the box and recognize the profound importance of the academy engaging social movements for sustainability, equity and justice.

In this working session, we will share “Beyond Borders” pedagogies that challenge the boundaries of our curriculum and bring social movements into the classroom. Presenters from diverse disciplines will provide case studies in research and teaching about social mobilizations. The workshop will conclude with participant discussion of how such strategies can be brought into their own classrooms and disciplines.

Schedules permitting, you are invited to attend part or this entire event. Refreshments provided.

H&S Distinguished Speaker in Humanities Lecture Series Presents: Anne Fadiman

Do you dog-ear your pages and fill them with marginalia, or do you preserve your books in a pristine state? More seriously, do you truly value books and reading? As the 2012 Distinguished Speaker in the Humanities, Ms. Anne Fadiman will use both personal and historical examples to explore these questions. Fadiman is perhaps best known for her book, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," a book about cultural disconnects between the Hmong and the American medical profession.
