Marc Black's Stroke of Genius: Film & Concert Presentation
The School of Health Sciences and Human Performance and the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute will co-present a live music performance and the 'Stroke of Genius' documentary.
The film, directed by Bahman Soltani, is an inspiring look at how Dan Mountain, a successful advertising writer from Venice Beach, California, turned his massive stroke into blessings for his community, his family, and himself.
He wrote poetry about his experience which his friend, singer songwriter, Marc Black, put to music and recorded with help from Art Garfunkel, John Sebastian, The Dixie Hummingbirds, and Steve Gadd, among others.
Marc will perform songs off the CD, live, before introducing the 'Stroke of Genius' documentary.
Following the film, Marc Black and a panel of IC faculty will hold a question and answer session.

First-Year Diversity Speaker - Dr. Maura Cullen
"Because learning occurs in the dynamic context of a global
economy that moves people, cultures, and ideas around the globe, we want the members of the Ithaca Community of learners to be at ease in a number of settings, with people from a variety of backgrounds, and with ideas new to their experience. All first-year students and new transfer students are required to attend a diversity workshop with Dr. Maura Cullen on Tuesday, September 11, 2012. Have you ever been afraid of saying the wrong thing, so instead said nothing at all? We are caught in times of political correctness, where "saying" the right things are worlds away from "doing" the right things. Considered one of the most inclusive sessions on diversity, this honest and engaging program gets to the core of the problem; our fear of being judged and misunderstood. This fear prevents good people from taking meaningful action. This workshop will be helpful for all who struggle with the concept of diversity and its' impact. A masterful storyteller, Dr. Cullen utilizes a variety of interactive exercises and techniques creating an experience you will not soon forget."

The term MOJATUBA, a mixture between the acronym MOJA—which stands for Modern Dance, Original Works, Jazz Styles, and African Influence—and its distinctive association with the tuba, represents a sample of the stylistic creativity that this ensemble can execute. The diverse ethnic theme of the program, especially its African influenced music and dance, contributes to the creation of a soulful energy that connects performers and audience, rendering each performance a profound spiritual experience.

Creating a Climate of Collaboration and Support through Mentoring
“Mentoring is an organizational practice whose time has come. In today's competitive business climate, the need for continuous learning has never been greater. At the same time, the hunger for human connection and relationship has never been more palpable. Because mentoring combines the impact of learning with the compelling human need for connection, it leaves individuals better able to deepen their personal capacity and maintain organizational vitality in the face of continuous challenge and change.” --Lois J. Zachary 2005
This workshop will begin with a discussion about effective mentoring relationships. The role and responsibilities of mentors and mentees will be discussed. There will be an opportunity to get to know each other and to form mentoring groups that are meaningful and productive.

Writing Intensive Workshop (register here)
What do we mean by “writing intensive”? And how can a faculty member
effectively manage the “paper load” that accompanies writing in a
course? This workshop will introduce the core principles of writing
across the curriculum (WAC) and review the ICC description of writing
intensive courses. Faculty will have the opportunity to workshop a major
assignment, crafting a sequence of writing activities that is both
manageable and pedagogically sound.
Light refreshments provided.
