True Lies and Other Stories: Joy Adams and the Evolution of Mad Sally offers Handwerker Gallery visitors a chance to reconnect with Mad Sally, the protagonist of Joy Adams' paintings, who first appeared in the Gallery eight years ago. With her monumental depictions of Sally, Adams redefines the notion of the hero by presenting an outsider who transcends accepted notions of gender and age. She weaves truth and fantasy in these lushly-painted canvases that are instilled with tradition and simultaneously construct contemporary narratives. Cosponsored by the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies, and the Judi and Jay Linden Center for Creativity and Aging.

To celebrate Constitution Day, Ithaca College will honor the struggle for racial justice in the United States. At this event, we will the celebrate the work of the late professor emeritus Harvey Francis Fireside, who wrote seven books about the significance of constitutional law in mobilizing for civil rights. The event will end with a showing of “The Jena 6,” a thirty-minute film about hidden racial inequality and violence becoming visible in Jena, Louisiana when black students try to integrate their playground. Six black teens charged with attempted murder sparks the largest civil rights demonstration in the South since the 1960s.
This event, which is open to the public and free, is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Department of Politics, and the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival.

The Discussion Series is a yearly event hosted by the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity. Our theme for this year is "Chaos or Community? MLK and the Politics of Resistance," borrowing from the title of Martin Luther King, Jr's book.
Since 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of MLK's death, we want the series to enable critical engagements with and interrogations of his work. We will look at retrospectives of his life and explore some of the themes he wrote about, such as antiracist and antiwar movements, resistance to oppression, critiques of capitalism and poverty, civil disobedience, and theologies of liberation.

Although increasing wages is important, it is not the only solution for improving recruitment and retention of direct care workers in long-term care. Improving aspects of job quality is another key factor in attracting and keeping staff. This conference will focus on evidence-based programs that positively impact job quality and improve retention in residential and home-and-community-based long-term care organizations. A variety of resources and "how to" tools will be available.
