Business Sustainability Speaker Series: Chris Carmody, Institute for Sustainable Development

Chris Carmody, executive director of the Institute for Sustainable Development, will present “Green Tsunami: How Businesses Can Save Themselves (& Might Save the Planet).” Chris will talk about the ‘value proposition’ for a business or non-profit organization to undergo an objective, rigorous, third-party sustainability performance audit and certification program. What is the “return on investment” for achieving such a “green” certification? Do customers and clients really care how “green” a business is? What are the important organizational “key performance indicators” that that such sustainability certification systems seek to measure? Why is it good for an organization to scrutinize how well they are achieving a “triple bottom line”? How are 'private regulation' and 'green’ supply chain requirements by large companies transforming business and the environment, and putting pressure on small businesses to change or disappear.

Izzy Awards: Honoring Mother Jones

The fifth annual Izzy Award for independent media – named after dissident journalist I.F. “Izzy” Stone – is being given to MOTHER JONES. The nonprofit outlet broke major stories in 2012 on issues ranging from mass shootings to the presidential election – including release of the now-infamous video in which candidate Mitt Romney
described 47% of voters as government-dependent
people “who believe that they are victims.”

Speaking at the ceremony will be Washington Bureau Chief DAVID CORN (who exposed the 47% video), publisher STEVE KATZ and environmental reporter KATE SHEPPARD, an Ithaca College

An Enemy of the People

Dr. Thomas Stockmann is a whistle-blower in a small, coastal Norwegian town bent on making a profit from the tourists who visit its mineral springs for their health. Dr. Stockmann risks the welfare of his family, his livelihood, and his very life to defend his conviction that the economic engine of his town, the mineral springs, is a source of pollution and disease. (Why) You Care about Language Change: A presentation by Dr. Joseph Salmons

Language changes. That simple, inevitable fact has rich implications for our lives, in ways that most people aren’t aware of.

While some people believe that differences in regional speech are dying out today in the U.S., much evidence shows that dialects are becoming much stronger and new dialect features are emerging rapidly, including basic pronunciation of words like bad and bag, Don and Dawn, or his and hiss, and these tell us much about recent history, about contemporary society and our own identities.

Dr. Joe Salmons is the Lester W.J. "Smoky" Seifert Professor of Germanic Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His most recent book, "A History of German: What the past reveals about today’s language," was published by Oxford University Press in 2012.

Arthur Miller, widely considered a leading playwright of conscience in American theatre, adapted Ibsen’s drama.
