Kelly Kessler ’07 had a dream of playing varsity field hockey. However when her plans did not work out, she discovered club sports instead and never missed a stride. After joining the student-organized field hockey team, Kelly participated on the field and also served in administrative roles.

Club sports provide students with opportunities to stay in touch with athletics, and also many gain valuable organizational and leadership experience by helping to run the teams. As Kelly's example shows, good athletics programs are able to complement academic accomplishment. A gift to athletics will benefit every student who hopes to find a full college experience at Ithaca.

Club Sports - Field Hockey

“Field hockey was very important to me in high school. When I looked around for colleges, I only applied to those with Division III field hockey.”

Playing and Organizing:

“When my dream to play varsity field hockey didn’t work out. I discovered the club team. I loved the game so much I just wanted the chance to play. The first year I played and served as team secretary. The next, I became vice president. Then, unexpectedly, I was called on to become president.”

On personal Growth:

“I got thrown into running the team, and it forced me to focus and get organized. I learned I’m one of those people who the more she has to do, the more she gets done. Those habits transferred directly to my academic work, and helped me a great deal.”

Embracing the Challenge:

“Looking back, I really wanted to play varsity field hockey, but my role on the club team actually may have been more challenging, because I had responsibilities both on and off the field.”

Personal Comment:

“I came to Ithaca for the academics, but without athletics there would have been a void. I learned a lot in the classroom, but I will never forget the friends I made on the field. They were just as important.”
