Brandi Bossinger ’07: Basketball

David Simoni ’07: Downhill Skiing

Kelly Kessler ’07: Field Hockey

Emma Steurer ’07: Volleyball

Only a limited number of students can play intercollegiate sports on varsity or junior varsity teams, but everyone can find a sport to play and a team to join in intramurals or in a club sport.

Thanks to a diverse and imaginative collection of club sports and intramural teams, there is something for every student at IC. In 2006-07, more than 1,300 students played intramural sports, and another 1,000 played club sports. Club sports are unique because they are organized and run entirely by students. The College sets policy and provides some funding, but students do the rest, including recruiting, organizing, scheduling, arranging travel, and much of the fund-raising, too.

At last count there are nearly 40 club sports for activities from water polo to ping-pong. There are clubs for the usual assortment of competitive sports such as ice hockey, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball. Other clubs pursue physical activity for the pure joy of moving – such as Taekwondo. Not all club teams are about competition. For example, there are  teams devoted to tap dancing, hip-hop dancing, break dancing, ballroom dancing – and at least six more clubs with “dance” in the title.

The great advantage of club sports is that they offer students the opportunity to discover new lifelong activities. Consider David Simoni ’07, who found downhill ski racing only after joining a club team. Read David’s story in Club Sports Open Doors.
