David Simoni ’07 tried ski racing for the first time when he joined the student-run team. “Now I'm hooked on downhill racing,” he says. “Club sports opened up a new world to me.”

“I joined as a freshman and stepped up to captain in junior year. I love downhill racing, though until I joined the team I’d never done it before.”

Team Profile:

“In 2007 our team included seven men and seven women. We competed against other college teams, some with much larger budgets, like Syracuse and Cornell. Others, like Alfred University, were actual varsity teams. We skied against Colgate, which was a varsity team that also included a few students on skiing scholarships.”

Level of Commitment:

“During the season we tried to get on the mountain three times a week, and a day or two on weekends. Each session involved three hours either practicing or competing, plus an additional hour of travel time each way. Also, students were responsible for organizing and running the team, and we raised more than half of our annual $5,800 budget.”

Academic Carryover:

“My involvement with the team affected my studies in a positive way. It forced me to learn how to balance my time. As a business major, managing the team was an interesting and valuable leadership experience.”

Camaraderie:

“Sometimes I felt closer to the people on the team than I did to my classmates in the business school. Maybe that was because the team worked together to run the club, and played together, too.”

Personal Comment:

“Do I wish the College could do more for the ski team and some of the other club teams? Sure. But I understand how hard that would be, and frankly it’s encouraging to see an athletic priority included in the Campaign for Ithaca College. It’s good to see the value of athletics getting some recognition.”
