The Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) accredits the graduate programs in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The department offers two major areas of study:

Speech-language pathology

This program prepares students to meet

• academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP)
• eligibility requirements for the clinical fellowship and Praxis examination (successful completion of these is required for the ASHA CCC-SLP)
• New York State licensure requirements

Teaching students with speech and language disabilities (TSSLD)

This program prepares students to meet

• academic and clinical requirements for the New York State initial teaching certificate
• academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP)
• eligibility requirements for the clinical fellowship and Praxis examination (successful completion of these is required for the ASHA CCC-SLP)
• New York State licensure requirements

The programs are designed for full-time study, beginning in the fall of each year, although students may enroll in courses anytime after their acceptance. Students entering without deficiencies typically complete the program in approximately 21 months. However, the amount of time required to complete the degree programs depends on the student’s clinical and academic background at the time of admission.

New York State Licensure Requirements

Admission

For both programs, consideration for admission requires

• an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution and
• a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 grading system)

Applicants whose baccalaureate degree is not in speech-language pathology are encouraged to apply. If they are admitted, their undergraduate work will be evaluated to determine what undergraduate courses, if any, they need to complete before they can matriculate.

Application for Admission

Preference is given to those applicants submitting all application materials to the Division of Graduate Studies by February 1 for fall admission. These must include

• application fee
• all official transcripts
• GRE scores
• two letters of recommendation

Undergraduate students from the speech-language pathology and audiology department at either Ithaca College or the State University of New York College at Cortland possessing a 3.50 GPA at the conclusion of their junior year need to submit only their official transcripts and an application fee.

Graduate Assistantships

Each year the department awards graduate assistantships that comprise both scholarship aid and taxable salary. Students awarded graduate assistantships fulfill duties in the department as assigned. Preference is given to those submitting assistantship application materials by February 1.

Tuition Expenses

Graduate tuition for the speech-language pathology programs is set at $555 per credit for the 2006-7 academic year.
