The Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) accredits the graduate programs in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The department offers two major areas of study:

Speech-Language Pathology

This program prepares students to meet

• academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP)
• eligibility requirements for the clinical fellowship and Praxis examination (successful completion of these is required for the ASHA CCC-SLP)
• New York State licensure requirements

Teaching Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD)

Students who complete this program meet all of the requirements listed above for the speech-language pathology program and also meet the New York State Education Department requirements for working as a speech-language pathologist in educational settings, such as a public school.

This program prepares students to meet

• academic and clinical requirements for the New York State initial teaching certificate in speech-language pathology
• academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology (CCC-SLP)
• eligibility requirements for the clinical fellowship and Praxis examination (successful completion of these is required for the ASHA CCC-SLP)
• New York State licensure requirements

Both programs are designed for full-time study; all students must begin the program in the fall semester. Students entering without deficiencies typically complete the program in approximately 21 months. However, the amount of time required to complete the degree programs depends on the student’s clinical and academic background at the time of admission.

Admission

For both programs, consideration for admission requires

• an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution and
• a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 grading system)

A list of pre-requisite courses may be found on this website. Applicants from undergraduate programs in communication disorders as well as those whose baccalaureate degree is not in speech-language pathology are encouraged to review this information.  Students whose baccalaureate degree is not in speech-language pathology are encouraged to apply. During the admission process the undergraduate work of all applicants will be evaluated to determine what undergraduate courses, if any, they need to complete before they can matriculate.

Application for Admission

Preference is given to those applicants submitting all application materials to the Division of Graduate and Professional Studies by February 1 for fall admission. These must include

• online application form
• application fee
• health report
• all official transcripts
• GRE scores
• two letters of recommendation for the graduate program
• two letters of recommendation for a graduate assistantship, if applying for one

Instructions for completing the online application are available after logging into the application system. Each letter of recommendation must be written by a different person (four different recommenders, in all, if the applicant is seeking an assistantship). Completion of the personal essay portion of the application is optional for programs offered through the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

Undergraduate students from the speech-language pathology and audiology department at either Ithaca College or the State University of New York at Cortland possessing a 3.50 GPA at the conclusion of their junior year need to submit only their online application form, official transcripts, a health report, and an application fee. Students applying for assistantships must also submit letters of recommendation, as stated below.

Graduate Assistantships

Each year the department awards graduate assistantships that comprise both scholarship aid and taxable salary. Students awarded graduate assistantships fulfill duties in the department as assigned. Preference is given to those submitting assistantship application materials by February 1. All students applying for assistantships must submit two letters of recommendation for assistantship (in addition to the two letters required for admission).

Tuition Expenses

Graduate tuition for the speech-language pathology programs is set at $632 per credit for the 2009-10 academic year.
