Summer Study Abroad

ITALY: Language and Culture

Open to students who have completed at least one semester of Italian study, this experiential, three-week, 3-credit summer program combines practice of conversational Italian with a cultural tour of historically important Tuscan cities. The program is based in the charming city of Siena and includes visits to Florence, Pisa, Lucca, and Rome.

MUSIC IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Through this three-and-a-half-week program of chamber music study in Brno, Czech Republic, musicians develop a stylistic understanding of the music of Central European composers, such as Janácek, Martinu, Bartók, Ligeti, and Kodály. Designed for performers, music educators, composers, and musicologists, the program contextualizes the music by exploring the art, literature, folk traditions, languages, and cultural history from which it was born.

PHOTO ITALY: Picturing the Culture and Landscape of Florence

Students continue their photographic work in the lush cultural setting of Florence. Lectures and assignments encompass both spontaneous and more deliberate image-making approaches, accommodating a wide range of photographic interests and emphases. The program includes walking tours of Florence and Siena delivered by local art historians and weekly shooting excursions to such cities as Siena, Pisa, and San Gimignano. An overnight visit to Venice to attend the Venice Biennale (an art exhibition of international scope and importance) is also planned.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS ADMINISTRATION

This four-week seminar program meets on the Ithaca campus for two weeks in April, then continues in London for two weeks in May. Students explore selected topics --- which may include international sports marketing, history of sport, and international sport development --- in an informal setting. The program includes trips to other cities as well.

CULTURE AND SOCIETY: An International Field Experience

Students learn about the basic culture, society, and social problems of the Spanish Caribbean in general and the Dominican Republic in particular. Social conflicts over racial and ethnic issues are analyzed, as are economic and environmental concerns in the Dominican Republic. This 3-credit course is for students who have completed an introductory course in the social sciences.

HEALTH CARE AND CULTURE: An International Field Experience

This course looks at sociocultural context in the delivery of health care and rehabilitation services and provides first-hand experience in the Dominican Republic. Students examine social, political, economic, and cultural factors in this developing country and investigate their influence on health care and individuals with disabilities.

SEMINAR: Social Aspects of Sport

Students explore the cultural, sociological, political, and economic significance of baseball in Latin America, particularly the Dominican Republic. While based in Santo Domingo, they travel to other cities to study baseball there as well.
