Children and the Teaching of Remedial Reading

Intensive introduction
to a systematic, multisensory model of remedial reading instruction, with
daily field experience tutoring a child. Lectures explain the skills and
concepts needed for reading ability and offer specific techniques with
which to teach them. Particular attention paid to addressing dyslexia
and related processing deficits. Daily attendance, good rapport with children,

Social Foundations of Education

Using a historical,
philosophical, sociological, and anthropological framework, this course
investigates contemporary social and cultural issues in education and
teaching, including equal educational opportunity; tracking/ability grouping;
the financing of U.S. schools; social class differences in school experience;
gender bias; the experience of African American, Latino, new Asian immigrant,
and linguistic-minority students in U.S. schools; bilingual education;
educating students with disabilities; the role of religion in U.S. schools;
sex education and sexuality; multicultural education; and recent proposals
for school improvement and reform. Reading and assignments help students
develop a framework and knowledge base for making informed decisions about
educational policy and practice. Required for all students in teacher
certification programs, but open to other students as well. Prerequisite:
one social science or humanities course. 3 credits.
