Course DescriptionsA Note about the Archaeological Field SchoolThe Ithaca College archaeological field school will return this summer to Aurora, N.Y., located about a half-hour by car north of Ithaca. Our initial explorations last summer of this archaeologically rich area were exciting and rewarding. The field school, a cooperative venture between Ithaca and Wells Colleges, is scheduled for June 11-July 13 this year and is a 6-credit course. Students stay in a Wells residence hall and eat at the Wells dining hall. We will excavate at Chonodote (Peachtown), one of the villages burned during the John Sullivan Campaign of 1779, and at the Patrick Tavern site (ca. 1791).
We will also conduct some archaeological survey work, finding and documenting sites. We are interested in the contact period, the time when Europeans arrived and native peoples were displaced. Students learn field methods at the sites and attend lectures, including some by guest speakers, two or three evenings a week. There are also excursions to local archaeological sites and sacred spots. We had a wonderful time last summer -- and made many amazing discoveries -- and I am anticipating another great field season.
