Aging and Creativity: Enhancing Life Quality through the Arts
May 24

This one-day conference, presented in cooperation with the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, will concentrate on how the quality of life for older adults can be enhanced by the arts. The conference will look at the creative process through the eyes of aging artists, teaching attendees ways to recognize and develop creativity. The talents of several older adults in dance, music, and the visual arts will also be showcased. Workshops will cover how to facilitate the writing of life histories, how music therapy can help cognitively impaired older adults, how to make a life mask, and more. To register, you must complete the registration form in the conference brochure, available on request from the summer sessions office.

The Healthy Musician:
Injury Prevention and Intervention for Health Care Providers and Musicians

Level I: June 22-24
Level II: June 25-26

Designed for health care providers and musicians, this comprehensive program of seminars and workshops will focus on health and musical performance. A multidisciplinary faculty will examine the physical and mental factors that affect both the musician and performance and will discuss the care and prevention of music-related injuries. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments every day.

Level I will offer sessions for health care providers and for musicians, and participants will be able choose the mix of sessions they want to attend. Areas of instruction will include basic anatomy and physiology, postural analysis, stress and mental training, practice techniques, common injuries, Feldenkrais® exercises, introduction to the Alexander Technique, learning styles (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), splinting, and biofeedback. Musicians will demonstrate five major instrument groups --- reeds, strings, keyboards, voice, and brass --- and a faculty recital will be given.

Level II is a continuation of level I. Although not required, participation in the level I workshop or a previous Healthy Musician workshop is strongly recommended. Learning styles, the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais exercises, breathing techniques, and physical therapy examination will be discussed and demonstrated in greater depth, and therapeutic massage, developmental optometry, and pharmacology will be presented for the first time.

To register for either or both levels, you must complete the registration form in the Healthy Musician brochure, which is available from the summer sessions office. One credit per level or noncredit.
