Continuing Education Programs

Ithaca College courses are open to local residents, and students enrolled in other colleges are welcome to attend as well. Summer courses taken on an extramural basis may be applied to a degree program at Ithaca College or transferred to other institutions. Fall and spring classes are also open to extramural students if space is available. To learn more, see the guide to extramural study.


Continuing Professional Education

Long-Term Care Service Delivery: Policy and Practice in Challenging Times

May 29

This conference, presented in cooperation with the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, will address the current state of long-term care service delivery in New York and the nation, as well as innovative (and sometimes controversial) alternative delivery methods and systems. Experts will discuss state and local policy issues and new approaches that increase consumer choice, address worker-shortage problems, improve services for low-income elders, and change the overall culture of long-term care. An open forum will provide time for questions and the sharing of ideas between presenters and conference participants. The Healthy Musician: Injury Prevention and Intervention for Health Care Providers and Musicians

Level I: June 21–23

Level II: June 24–25

Designed for health care providers and musicians, this comprehensive program of seminars and workshops focuses on health and musical performance. A multidisciplinary faculty will examine the physical and mental factors that affect both the musician and performance and will discuss the care and prevention of music-related injuries. Descriptions of the individual workshops and the two levels are provided in the Healthy Musician brochure and at www.ithaca.edu/cess. To register, you must complete the registration form in the Healthy Musician brochure, which is available from the summer sessions office. One credit per level or noncredit.

Health/Fitness Instructor Workshop and Certification Examination

July 22–26

The Health/Fitness Instructor Workshop increases the competence of individuals who conduct exercise programs for healthy people or those with controlled diseases. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) grants the certification of health/ fitness instructor to candidates who successfully complete the examination given on Friday, July 26.

Summer Piano Institute

July 7–13

The Summer Piano Institute is a comprehensive program of varied musical experiences for talented young pianists, aged 12 through 18. Participants use the superb facilities of the James J. Whalen Center for Music, where a nationally and internationally known piano faculty provides a lively array of daily lessons, workshops, classes, and supervised practice. Recreational and social activities, such as field trips and picnics, are offered too. The institute is residential, but commuters are also welcome. To apply, you must complete the application in the Summer Piano Institute brochure, which is available from the summer sessions office.

Computer-Math and Recreation Program

July 15–19

This program is for children who will be in grades 4 and 5 next fall. The activities are highly individualized and will challenge participants according to their abilities and interests. Children who love math and are good at it, as well as those who are turned off by math, will benefit. Enrollment is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply, you must complete the application in the Computer-Math and Recreation Program brochure, which is available from the summer sessions office.

Computer-Math, Leadership, and Recreation Program

July 22–26

Open to youth who will be in grades 6 through 9 next fall, this program is highly individualized and will challenge those who are mathematically motivated. It will also help prepare youth who did not fully understand math during the school year move to the next grade. The program does not focus on drill and practice, but rather fosters self-confidence and allows young people to make connections between their innate talents and math. Enrollment is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
