Chronological survey, in three semesters, of music from the early Christian era to the present. Origins and evolution of musical styles, forms, and genres, as well as correct procedures of performance practice are stressed. First semester: music from the early Christian era to the end of the baroque era. Second semester: music of the classical and romantic eras. Third semester: music of the 20th century with emphasis on stylistic changes and contemporary techniques. The courses should be taken in sequence. 3 credits per semester. (F-S)

The study and performance of early music for singers and instrumentalists. Projects require transcribing music from primary and secondary sources, studying performance techniques on available historical instruments, and rehearsing and performing the transcribed music.
