Lectures, films, panel discussions, workshops, and performances present thorough coverage of careers in the music field. Members of the School of Music faculty, all of whom are experienced in the areas they discuss, are present during class sessions. These appearances, together with those of selected off-campus guests, permit a realistic appraisal of current vocational opportunities. Students are assisted in (1) selecting goals in the music profession that are realistic in view of present conditions of employment and (2) evaluating their career goals in light of their own qualifications and those apparently essential for success in the field. An elective for the music major or non-music major with considerable musical knowledge. Subjects covered include intermediate sound recording techniques, compositional processes as applied to electronic music, philosophy of electronic composition, and use of extended electronic techniques. Visual (score) and aural analysis of compositional devices and processes in standard electronic repertoire. An exploration of how musicians can reach and build broader audiences for the various genres of classical music. Topics include the importance of community involvement, musicians' interaction with audiences, visual presentation of performance (i.e. multi-media, lighting), presenting 20th and 21st century music to diverse audiences, connecting with music education programs in colleges and the public schools, and understanding several aspects of music management. An introduction to the methods, procedures, and terminology necessary to organize, maintain, and distribute an inventory of brass and woodwind instruments in a public school setting. A skill-development course designed to help the musician care for and service woodwind instruments. Students produce and master a demo CD (portfolio) of materials for presentation. Materials for the senior project should be drawn primarily from previously recorded projects, but should involve additional work such as final mastering to CD, including appropriate coding, development of artwork, and registering and securing appropriate rights and copyrights. Consideration of aspects of teaching voice, private or group, on the secondary and college level. The writings of vocal pedagogues and voice scientists are studied.
