This course introduces first-semester freshmen to the purposes of a liberal arts education and helps them assess and formulate their own educational goals. Discussions and written assignments focus on the intellectual and personal development involved in becoming an active and successful participant in the academic community. Topics include liberal arts and career opportunities, critical thinking skills, diversity in the academic community, ethical decision making, and academic honesty as well as information on learning strategies and college resources. 1 credit. 336-19900     Diversity in Groups     U LA

Theoretical and applied explanations and discussions of how beliefs and value systems develop and how they influence behavior. Special emphasis is given to values, beliefs, and behaviors relating to differences in age, abilities, class, gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Class work includes readings, group discussions, experiential exercises, and videos. The course is designed for small groups and its primary emphasis is on experience-based learning. 2 credits. A seven-week course on the College library collections and services. Instruction in use of periodical indexes, abstracts, reference sources, card catalog, and nonbook materials. Emphasis on completion of two bibliographic search projects. 1 credit. (F)

336-10800     Business Reference Sources and Methods of Research     NLA

A seven week course to enable students to select, locate, and use basic and advanced business and economics sources in the College library and other libraries; formulate, define, and conduct a research strategy on a specific company, industry, or business topic; and write a report on a company based on an analysis of information gathered through interviews and print and electronic sources. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and above. Open to all majors, but highly recommended for students in the School of Business. 1 credit. (F-S,Y)
