Academic Opportunities

Internships

Previous SectionNext Section

A variety of internship experiences are possible in all departments of the Park School. Internships are normally taken during a student's junior or senior year. Sponsors include local, regional, national, and international television, radio, advertising, motion picture, educational, and corporate media organizations and the communication and training departments of many corporations and nonprofit organizations.
Internships are available during fall and spring semesters, as well as the summer session. They may be repeated with variable credit awarded up to a maximum of 6 credits per experience. (London internships are 3 credits only.) Students must have completed at least 60 credits (at least 24 credits and two semesters at Ithaca College) before the internship begins. Students may not have more than three internships and may not receive more than 12 internship credits including London and Los Angeles. Students interested in an internship should obtain a copy of the internship guidelines in the Park School dean's office and consult with their adviser.
All internships in Los Angeles are administered through the communications program in Los Angeles (see below). Students who are interested in a London internship must apply through the Office of International Programs at the time they apply for the London Center. Internships are evaluated pass/fail only.

Independent Study

Previous SectionNext Section

Independent study offers students the opportunity to pursue historical, critical, empirical, and/or creative research in communications under faculty supervision. Areas of investigation are described in the course listings for each department.

Communications Program in Los Angeles

Previous SectionNext Section

The Park School offers an internship-centered, site-based program in Los Angeles. Students have the opportunity to intern at a wide variety of organizations. Los Angeles internships are for 6 credits only in the fall and spring semesters, and for 3-6 credits in the summer.
In addition to internships, students take courses in several communications areas. All classes are held in Ithaca College facilities, and students live in College-provided housing. Tuition is the same as at the home campus, and housing costs are similar to off-campus housing costs in Ithaca.
This junior and senior program allows students to make valuable contacts with people in the Los Angeles professional communications community, including many Ithaca College alumni, and to experience the culture and opportunities of the Los Angeles environment.
Additional information is available from advisers or the dean's office.

London Program

Previous SectionNext Section

The Park School participates in the London Center program through course offerings and selected internships. Students interested in studying at the London Center may obtain information from the Office of International Programs.

Singapore Communications Exchange

Previous SectionNext Section

Juniors and seniors majoring or minoring in communications may participate in the academic program offered at Nanyang Technological University. In the exchange agreement, up to five students from the NTU School of Communications spend a semester at Ithaca, and an equal number of Ithaca College students may attend classes, taught in English, in Singapore.

Minors

Previous SectionNext Section

Communication plays an important role for students in a number of disciplines. To serve these students, the Park School offers several minor programs. Minors in the television-radio department are scriptwriting, advertising and public relations, audio production, media studies, journalism, and international communications. The cinema and photography department offers a minor in still photography. The organizational communication, learning, and design department (OCLD) offers a minor by the same name. Details of these programs, including enrollment restrictions, are given in the following pages under the respective departments' listings.
An interdisciplinary minor in health communication involves course work in health services administration, OCLD, and speech communication. For more information on this minor, see the department of speech communication on p. 214.
The number of seats available for some minor programs may be limited. Students normally enroll after their freshman year.
Course Duplication - When the same course is required by a minor and a major, the course is credited to the major and a substitute course for the minor must be approved in writing by the adviser, the minor coordinator, and the major department chair.
