An overview of learning and communication theories as they relate to organizational communication. Includes internal and external communication; principles of message design and visual literacy; technologies in the workplace; professional practices; principles of persuasion, motivation, and instruction; and dyadic, group, and mass communication processes. Introduction to the design and production of audio-visual media, including computer generated graphics, overhead transparencies, slides, and posters. Emphasis on systematic design and production; critical application of graphic design principles to instructional, informational, and motivational messages; creative use of these media in educational and corporate settings. Practical experience in graphic design layout, composition, storyboarding, slide and audio production, budgeting, scheduling, and delivery, emphasizing hands-on use of computer systems. 3 credits. A study of basic theories, principles, and models of design, learning, and instruction that provide a foundation for the design of learning systems. Emphasis on evaluation and criticism of design products, examination of design processes, and creation of new design products. Prerequisites: 225-10100 or 225-11100. 3 credits. (F-S)

Introduction to the theory and practice of video design and production in corporate and other organizational settings. Emphasis on the nature of corporate, industrial, instructional, and not-for-profit video, program formats, and beginning field production and postproduction. 225-24000     Organizational Writing and Publishing     NLA

Through theory and practice, this course examines the roles of and techniques for creating printed materials such as public relations materials, proposals, manuals, newsletters, and annual reports. Students use desktop publishing systems for writing and layout assignments, and examine the effects of design and dissemination decisions on internal and external audiences. Prerequisites: 377-10600 or 377-10700. 3 credits. (Y)

225-25000     Computer Applications in Organizations     NLA

Analysis of microcomputer hardware and software systems as they relate to media production and organizational communication, with specific focus on social issues such as privacy, ethics, job restructuring, information flow, and access to information. Hands-on practice, exercises, and short papers provide knowledge and skills in such areas as computer graphics, desktop publishing, computer-based training, interactive kiosks, on-line information services, the Internet, and CD-ROMs. Prerequisites: 225-10100 or 312-11000 or 312-15700. 3 credits. Review of theories of conflict and methods of conflict management relevant to organizational communication processes. Participants assess their conflict style and skills. Attention is given to communication and conflict emergence, analysis, and methods for change in organizations. Includes use of appropriate organizational case studies to amplify communication issues. Prerequisites: 225-10800 or sophomore standing. 3 credits. (Y)

225-27000     Slide Imaging: Techniques and Applications     NLA

Focus on creative design and production skills for still images. In addition to basic photographic principles, the course emphasizes the relative merits of traditional photography and slide shows as compared with newer computer-generated desktop presentations. This analysis highlights the aesthetic, technical, business, and ethical considerations of slide imaging techniques and their applications. Students use cameras to create original images, learn digital imaging techniques involving scanning and image manipulation, and then create a stand-alone slide program (in multi-image or desktop format with a synchronized audio track). Students must have access to a 35 mm camera. Prerequisites: 225-11100. 3 credits (Y)

225-31000     Organizational Speech Writing and Interviewing     LA

The role of the organizational communication specialist includes many functions, two of which are addressed in this course. The organizational interviewing function focuses on dyadic and group situations where information is gathered, evaluated, and sometimes shared, such as selection, appraisal, and focus group interviews. The organizational speech writing function focuses in addition on the production and dissemination of information and includes audience analysis and manuscript writing. Students prepare and conduct interviews, write speeches, and critique both the execution and underlying dynamics of each. Prerequisites: 225-10800 or 319-11500 and two level 1 or 2 OCLD courses. 3 credits. (Y).

Examines the theories and practices of participatory leadership in organizational settings. Specific attention is given to communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making formats, and media applications. Prerequisites: Junior standing and three courses in communications. 3 credits. (F)

An examination of the theoretical bases and applications of technical communication such as scientific and technical writing, designing user interfaces, creating support documentation for software packages, writing on-line technical documentation, and preparing proposals. Students engage in audience analysis, debriefing of subject matter experts, collaborative writing, and managing the technical communication process as it relates to the transfer of information. Prerequisites: 225-10100 or 225-11100, 225-21000, 225-24000; 377-10600 or 377-10700. 3 credits. (Y)

225-33400     Promotional and Instructional Video Practicum     NLA

The application of video communication within organizations, providing students an opportunity to design, produce, and evaluate a video program for a client. Students analyze case studies, meet with professional video communicators, maintain client relationships, and conduct needs analysis and program evaluation. Prerequisites: 225-23400 or 221-20100. 3 credits. (S)

225-34000     Research and Evaluation in Organizational Communication, Learning, and Design     NLA

An examination of quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation methods in applied communications settings. Emphasis on theoretical bases, procedures, and ethical considerations. Skills are developed in application of techniques as well as in interpretation and criticism of studies. Prerequisites: Junior or senior OCLD majors or minors only. 3 credits. (F)

"Performance technology" refers to a broad view of how factors such as learning, motivation, perception, environment, group interaction, communication, and management come together to influence individual and organizational performance. Includes study of methods for understanding these factors and for making positive change in the performance of individuals and organizations. Topics include needs assessment, performance analysis, task analysis, system modeling, goal setting, and design. Emphasis is on non-training interventions. Involves a team-based project for a local nonprofit organization. Prerequisites: 225-10100, 225-21000, and sophomore standing. 3 credits. (Y)

An examination of the theoretical bases and applications of interactive media such as digital video, CD-ROM, and on-line systems providing hands-on experience in designing, shooting, and programming interactive projects. Students are exposed to a variety of hardware and software systems and products, focusing on instructional and informational applications of these new technologies and their acceptance in the marketplace. Prerequisites: Junior standing, 312-11000 or 312-15700 or 225-25000. 3 credits. (Y)

Explores the relationships between organizational communication, organizational culture, and multicultural organizations, and such variables as race, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, and religion. The course of study includes theoretical analysis as well as an examination of organizational practices in adapting to diversity. Special attention is given to communication strategies in culturally diverse organizations. Prerequisites: Junior standing and three courses in communications. 3 credits. (S)

The theory and practice of designing microcomputer media that help people learn. Concepts of interactivity, feedback, perception, and learning are studied. Students integrate knowledge of learning systems design with microcomputer media development skills in designing, developing, and testing a computer-assisted learning lesson for an Ithaca College faculty member. Prerequisites: 225-10100, 225-11100, 225-21000, and 225-25000 or 312-11000 or 312-15700. 3 credits. (Y)

Students may take a second semester of this course with approval of the instructor. Prerequisites: Junior standing. 1-6 credits. Total credit for 225-41200 and 225-49900 may not exceed 6 credits. 225-42000     Seminar in Organizational Culture and Communication     LA

Organizational communication is investigated through examining symbol-using systems. Students are exposed to contemporary writings and methods analyzing communication within organizations. Emphasis is on the use of language; explication of values; use of rites, rituals, and ceremonies; the role of the organization's founders; and assumptions of organizational life. Knowledge of theoretical concepts is reinforced by their application to documented accounts of organizational communication experiences. Prerequisites: 225-32000, 225-36000, or 885-30600. 3 credits. An examination of principles and practices for managing people and facilities and creating policies to achieve program goals in various organizational contexts, including employee communication, public affairs and promotions, and training. Assignments and topics encompass both theoretical and practical aspects of organizational communication management and include case studies, simulations, and reviews of related research and trends. Prerequisites: Senior OCLD majors and minors only. 3 credits. (S)

An analysis of the theoretical bases of communication in organizational settings with a focus on the impact of communication technologies on organizational communication practices, as well as ethical issues. Intensive study under the supervision of a faculty adviser. Comprehensive research paper (not project) is required. Prerequisites: Junior or senior OCLD majors. Variable credit; 1-6 credits. May be repeated for a total of no more than 6 credits.
