Prepares students to teach motor skills to public school-aged children. Developmental information emphasizes stage theories and developmental task analysis focused on motor skill acquisition. Motor development, motor learning, and instructional design are covered. Students task analyze a variety of activities, plan developmentally appropriate lessons, and teach peers and public school-aged children. 3 credits. (F,Y)

660-20300     Adapted Physical Education and Sport     NLA

Provides students with an understanding of individuals with disabilities. Students learn to adapt physical education activities to meet the abilities of an individual with special needs in order to provide a safe and successful learning experience. Career opportunities in sport for individuals with disabilities, legislation affecting the adapted physical education program, and individual education plan development are discussed. 660-23000     Teaching Physical Activities for the Young Child     NLA

Prepares future elementary school physical education teachers to select, plan, and implement developmentally appropriate activities. The objective is an understanding of the "skill theme approach" to children's physical education curriculum, based on movement concepts and levels of skill proficiency. Emphasis is on an applied understanding of how and what to teach. Prerequisite: 660-15500. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

660-23900     Microcomputer Applications in Physical Education     NLA

Introduction to hardware and software components of a computer information system. Students learn about word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other DOS software. Some fundamental aspects of BASIC programming are included. Software applications for physical education are discussed. Cross-listed with 662-23900 and 663-23900. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: 660-23900, 662-23900, 663-23900, 312-11000 or 312-15700. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

660-25500     Philosophy and Principles of Coaching     NLA

The philosophy and principles of coaching young athletes. Emphasis is on development of a coaching philosophy through critical examination of issues relating to the coaching of children and youth. Coaching responsibilities, developmental characteristics of children and youth, and their implications for the conduct of athletic programs, instructional and administrative methods, effective design and conduct of practices, and enhancement of contest performance are also discussed. 660-33100     Developmental Activities for the Young Child     NLA

Techniques of teaching developmentally appropriate physical activities to young children, from birth to age four, including children with disabilities. The course includes an overview of growth and development, theories of play, and implications for development in cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains, program planning, needs assessment, and evaluation of program outcomes. Students teach in preschool programs in the Ithaca community. Prerequisites: 330-21000 and 660-15500. 3 credits. (S, O)

660-33200     Curriculum and Methods in Elementary School Physical Education     NLA

Focus on description and analysis of physical education in the elementary school. The course includes curriculum design, teaching methods, problems relating to program planning, time allotment, administration of facilities, and program evaluation. Students have the opportunity to participate in micro-peer teaching and to observe and teach elementary physical education classes in the Ithaca school system. Analysis of the program of physical education in secondary schools; criteria for the selection and grade placement of activities; consideration of methods and teaching techniques; problems relating to program planning, time allotment, administration of facilities, and program evaluation. Observation and teaching of secondary physical education classes in the Ithaca school system, as well as micro-peer teaching on campus. Practical experience in public, voluntary, or commercial agencies or businesses providing various types of physical education, sports-related activities, or services. Prerequisites: 660-10300, major or minor in the Department of Health Promotion and Human Movement or the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, junior standing or above, and permission of department chair. 1-6 credits. 660-42100     Contemporary Activities in Physical Education     NLA

Presents and develops the skills necessary to teach a variety of nontraditional activities and games that are popular in high school curricula. Skill areas such as the following are presented: water polo, cricket, team handball, orienteering, personal defense, yoga, pickleball, racquetball, floor hockey, and other innovative activities. 660-43900     Tests and Measurement in Physical Education     NLA

Covers various measurement concepts in a lecture/lab format: formative and summative evaluation in physical education; criteria for selection of tests; elementary statistical procedures; construction and analysis of physical fitness, skill, and knowledge tests; procedures for classification and marking of pupils; and evaluation of teacher and program efficiency. 660-44000     Organization and Administration of Physical Education and Athletics     NLA

Policies and procedures in the organization and administration of physical education and athletics in the public school setting. Directed discussions and investigation of the nature and scope of administrative responsibilities in programs of physical education and athletics. 660-44100     Student Teaching in Physical Education     NLA

Observation and supervised student teaching. Assignment to approved cooperating schools full time for one semester in the senior year. Experience in classroom observation, participation, teaching, coaching, and intramural and noon-hour supervision. Individual conferences with Ithaca College coordinators of field experiences. Required of all students preparing to teach physical education in elementary or secondary school. Prerequisites: 327-34000, 330-21000, 660-33200, 660-33300. 12 credits. (F-S,Y)

Observation and supervised student teaching. Assignment to approved public schools full time for a half semester in the senior year. Experience in structured observation, classroom assisting, and direct instruction; additional experience in planning, conferencing, and related school duties outside regular class periods. Individual conferences are held with Ithaca College supervisors of field experiences. Required of all dual health and physical education majors. Supervised work experience in a sports-related service agency or business during the summer or the regular academic year. Prerequisites: Minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA, junior standing or above, and permission of the instructor and department chair. For 7-12 credits, approval of the provost is required. 6-12 credits. Professional Skills

Skill courses are designed to develop competence in the areas of dance, gymnastics, aquatics, individual and dual sports, and team sports. The courses emphasize skill development, preparation of resource material, and methodology of teaching particular activity skills, unlike GIPPE courses which concentrate primarily on skill development. Exemption from basic courses may be possible when competence can be verified by meeting prescribed levels of proficiency.
All persons who participate in any activity course must have a health clearance on file in the Ithaca College health center.

Intercollegiate Athletic Courses

Credit may be awarded for a full season of participation in a junior varsity or varsity sport, including preseason conditioning, skills, strategies, and competitive opportunities. In addition to registering for the particular sport during advance or open registration, or during the add/drop period, students must work through the head coach to register for credit at the time of participation. No late requests for credit will be honored. Intercollegiate athletic courses are offered on a pass/fail basis only. Prerequisites: Medical clearance for all sports participants by the College health center. 0.5 credit each.
