Fieldwork gives students firsthand experience working and socializing with the elderly. Under the supervision of a trained professional within an organization in the Ithaca area, students engage in work activities, including direct service to the aged, as well as service to the host agency. An integrated series of seminars provides students with the context from which to better understand the needs of the community-based elderly as well as the local, state, and national resources available and not available to meet those needs. Work experience under a qualified preceptor, with periodic written progress reports and a written major report on the job. Conferences with faculty. The first professional internship, which takes place between the sophomore and junior year, is a general internship for all students. The second internship, between the junior and senior year, is more specifically related to the student's particular career interest within the health care field.
