Studio Courses

Studio courses are arranged to give students twice as many studio hours as credits.

326-12000     Two-Dimensional Design     FA LA 3b

A course dealing with fundamentals of design on a flat surface and providing perceptual as well as technical understanding of formal elements employed in producing works of art. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

An introduction to the creative work process and decision making as related to the creation of three-dimensional art. Deals with basic design concepts as they relate to the realization and fabrication of three-dimensional design. 3 credits. (S,Y)

Training in perception and the imagination as they relate to drawing. Exploration of several drawing media. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-14000     Introduction to Painting     FA LA 3b

A studio course in creative painting. Methods and materials of painting, basics of color, composition, form, and space organization. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

Introductory studio course in creative sculpture. Methods and materials of sculpture; basic concepts of form, mass, and space in sculpture. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

Workshop techniques in woodcuts and intaglio processes. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-22000     Intermediate Drawing     FA LA 3b

Using work begun in Introduction to Drawing, this course expands into areas of drawing as an entity in itself. Continuations, refinements, and techniques, as well as an in-depth examination of varied aspects of drawing as a major art form. Prerequisites: 326-13000. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

Consists of time-honored methods of developing drawing skills by working with the human form. Problems dealing with anatomy, movement, mass, volume, shading, and composition are covered. Prerequisites: An introductory art course. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

Studio course continuing the experience of creative painting. Development of awareness of problems of form, space, color, and content. Painting techniques. Studies from nature and objects, as well as nonfigurative approaches. Prerequisites: 326-14000. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-25000     Intermediate Sculpture     FA LA

Intermediate studio course in creative sculpture. Further development of concepts of form, mass, space, and content in sculpture. Traditional and nontraditional media and techniques explored. Prerequisites: 326-15000. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-25500     Printmaking - Silk Screen     FA LA

An introduction to serigraphy (silk-screen) processes. Learning technical processes and their use in relationship to the philosophy of drawing and painting. Setting up problems specifically dealing with the nature of serigraphy, including photo silk screen, glue, gels, and film. Prerequisites: An introductory art course. 3 credits. (F,Y)

An introduction to planeographic (lithography) processes. Learning technical processes and their use in relationship to the philosophy of drawing and painting. Setting up problems specifically dealing with the nature of lithography and dealing with them using the techniques of litho stones. Prerequisites: An introductory art course. 3 credits. (S,Y)

Study toward a high level of drawing proficiency. Drawing from the figure. Exploratory and definitive compositional drawing, figurative and nonfigurative. Prerequisites: 326-13000 and 326-22000 or 326-22100. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-34000     Advanced Painting     FA LA

Advanced problems in painting with emphasis on the creation of individual work. Aims at the development of a personal aesthetic in painting. Prerequisites: 326-14000 and 326-23000. 3 credits.(F-S,Y)

326-35000     Advanced Sculpture     FA LA

Advanced problems in sculpture with emphasis on individual expression. Aims at technical competence and the development of a personal aesthetic. Prerequisites: 326-15000 and 326-25000. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

326-38000     Computer Art     FA LA

An introduction to the creative use of small computers as fine-arts tools, building on techniques and concepts developed in traditional two-dimensional studio course work. This course addresses both the technical and conceptual issues of artists working with this new technology through problems specifically related to computer painting, printmaking, and animation. Prerequisites: Three studio art courses. 3 credits. (F-S,Y)

Advanced projects under specifically directed tutelage. Projects to be arranged between instructor and students. Offered on demand only. Prerequisites: Introductory courses or permission of instructor. 1-4 credits.

326-49000, 326-49100     Senior Project     U LA

A directed project under advisement of the faculty in the student's major area (painting, printmaking, sculpture). The aim is to develop a body of work demonstrating creative initiative. Must be taken for two semesters. Required of B.F.A. art majors. Prerequisites: Senior standing, completion of 24 credits in art, and permission of instructor. 3 credits per semester. (F-S,Y)
