Creativity & Resiliency in Aging:
Duke Ellington's Artistry in His Final Decades
Jeffrey M. Lyness, MD
Dr. Lyness is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He is Director of the Program in Geriatrics and Neuropsychiatry and Director of Medical Student Education. His research interests are in the relationships between depression and medical illnesses in later life.
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) had an unparalleled 50 year career as a pianist, composer/arranger, and bandleader. After several potentially career-ending setbacks, he reinvigorated his artistic and commercial success in his mid-50s, and the last two decades of his life were among his most creative. The presentation will use audio and video clips to illustrate Duke's career biography, and will consider the broad implications of creative resiliency and aging for clinical work with older adults.
