Northeast Wind Conducting Symposium
(MUED-73700-41)
The Ithaca College Northeast Wind Conducting Symposium is designed to investigate and improve techniques of conducting and rehearsing, and to explore other topics of interest to the serious wind conductor. The 2008 symposium features Richard Floyd, state director of music at the University of Texas at Austin and director and conductor of the Austin Symphonic Band, and Stephen Peterson, director of bands at Ithaca College. Floyd is a recognized authority on conducting, the art of wind band rehearsing, concert band repertoire, and music advocacy. He has toured extensively as a clinician, adjudicator and conductor. Stephen Peterson currently conducts the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble and teaches courses in conducting and wind literature. Together they will lead lecture/discussion sessions with wind conductors at all levels.
Topics include repertoire, rehearsal techniques, score study, intonation, ideas for musical growth, national standards, and setting and maintaining musical, personal, and educational standards. In addition participants will conduct a live ensemble each morning, focusing on refining their conducting skills. Participants will conduct a live ensemble while focusing on refining their conducting and communication skills, and then may submit their own repertoire for inclusion in the conducting sessions.

Choral Music Experience:
From Gahu to Gloria: Singing, Drumming, and Dancing
in the Choral Community
(MUED-73500-41)
Offered by nationally recognized choral conductor/clinician and faculty member at Ithaca College Janet Galván, along with supporting IC colleague Jennifer Haywood, this workshop will feature guest artist Kathy Armstrong who has brought West African drumming, dancing, and singing to thousands of choristers. Kathy has brought together people of all ages and backgrounds at Baobab Tree I Ottawa, Canada, a socially responsible organization that gives back to the African community by raising funds and awareness for the village of Dagbamete in Ghana. Workshop participants will learn how to incorporate this material into any choral setting.
The Choral Music Experience is an integrated approach, combining the development of performance skills with the acquisition of musical knowledge. The repertoire will be varied, featuring distinctive works for all difficulty levels from several styles and periods for treble voices, mixed choirs, and young men’s choruses. Workshop registrants will participate in a conducting master class working with a chorus of young people ages eleven to eighteen from the Young People’s Chorus of New York City and the Ithaca Children’s Choir.
Dr. Janet Galván conducts the Ithaca College Women’s Chorale, the Ithaca College Chorus, and is Artistic Director for the Ithaca Children’s Choir. She has conducted national, regional, and all-state choirs throughout the US. Kathy Armstrong is a percussionist and educator who is well-known for her work in bringing Ghanaian music and dance to choirs, schools and community groups in North America and Europe since 1990.
