2009 C2C Research Award Winners
Layne Kasprzyk (Environmental Science/Chemistry 2010) furthered his research under Chemistry Professor Akiko Fillinger on recycling IC Dining Hall waste oil into biodiesel fuel, and C2C funds supported Taryn Hubbard (Environmental Studies 2010) and Emma Hileman (Environmental Studies 2011) in developing an organic garden on campus.
2009 C2C Internship Award Winners
2009's interns worked on a diversity of topics and in varied locales - from here on the IC campus to California and New Zealand, and covering topics that ranged from endangered species research and protection to land conservation to permaculture to eco-friendly transportation planning...
Becky Webster, ESP's fearless reporter, work/study student and combined ESP/Journalism major (2011), traveled to New Zealand with International Student Volunteers, where she worked on conservation projects addressing habitat restoration and endangered species preservation, and explored the extraordinary environments and culture of the "Land of the Long White Cloud" (the Maori name for NZ). Zach Cava (Biology December 2009, Environmental Studies minor) studied rattlesnake/ground squirrel interactions over the summer in the San Francisco Bay Area with Dr. Rulon Clark of San Diego State University. Zach's photos are posted to the FieldHerpsForum blog (links below).
Emma Hileman (Environmental Studies 2011) worked with the Finger Lakes Land Trust on land management and program administration. Allison Ward (Psychology 2010) provided support to start-up of Ithaca's new sustainability-focused charter school, New Roots.
Jeff Goodwin (TV-Radio 2010) and Bryan Davis (Communication Management & Design 2010, Environmental Studies minor) both worked on alternative transportation planning - Jeff developing a management plan for the IC campus and Bryan working with the Ithaca community on the Way2Go Program.
Drea Kasianchuk (Communication Management and Design 2010, Environmental Studies minor) and Becky Bowen (Environmental Studies December 2009) both combined sustainability education and permaculture work in different settings, Drea at EcoVillage at Ithaca and supporting development of on-line learning for a University of Hawai'i program, and Becky working at the Cayuta Sun Homestead to help host the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute's annual permaculture design course.
