Troubleshooting
Tips - these tips serve two purposes:
1) They may help you solve the problem
on your own, and 2) They will help you
be better prepared to report problems with college-owned equipment,
should you need to contact the Helpdesk.
- #1 Tip - If your computer
is acting "flaky," simply quitting your applications and restarting
(rebooting) will often solve the problem (really!).
- Cables can come lose and sound/brightness controls can get bumped.
Check your cable connections and control knobs before calling for
help.
- Find out if others are also having the problem (especially if
you are trying to connect to a Novell server or the Internet, for
example). This will help us determine if the problem extends beyond
your personal workstation.
- Try to think of anything that has changed or happened recently
that might be causing the problem.
- Is the problem with something that normally works fine or are
you trying something new?
- Have you checked your manuals and/or on-line Help for answers
to "how-to" questions?
- Have you noted the exact text of error messages (if any)?
Password Tips
- If your password contains numbers, is the Num Lock key ON?
Printing
Problems
- Have you noted the exact text of error messages (if any, on computer
or on printer)?
- Do you know the name of the printer or print queue?
- Is the problem with one application or all applications?
- Have you saved your documents, quit all applications and rebooted
the computer?
- Have you power cycled (rebooted) the printer?
- Is anyone else in the office having a printing problem?
- Is this something that has worked before or are you trying something
new?
- Has this problem ever occurred before?
- Has anything changed since the last time it worked?
- What have you done to try and correct the problem?
- Are all cables securely plugged in?
- Does the printer have toner/ink and paper?
- Are you printing to the correct printer?
Mouse/Keyboard
Problems
- Are mouse and keyboard securely plugged in? After checking cable
connections, did you reboot then try the mouse/keyboard again?
- Can you test your mouse/keyboard on a different computer or can
you test a different mouse/keyboard on your computer?
Removable
Disk Problems (floppy, ZIP, CD drives)
- Can you test the disk on a different computer?
- Can you test different disks with your own computer?
- Is the disk the correct format for your computer?
