Interesting Stuff - What are TV Ratings?

In recent times we have heard a lot of debate about the different types of TV ratings and what each one means. Many people are unaware of the different sub-codes that usually accompany the rating in the upper left corner of the TV screen within the first 5-10 seconds of a show. The ratings are not shown on all shows and sometimes not at all, as is the case with shows on NBC. So, you ask, what are the different rating types?

      E/I Educational or Informational programming, usually on PBS.
      TV-Y Children's programs, OK for all children.
      TV-Y7 Children's programs, designed for children 7 and older.
      TV-G General Programming, OK for all audiences.
      TV-PG General programming, parental guidence suggested.
      PG-14 General programming, designed for people 14 and older.
      TV-MA General programming, designed for mature audiences.
      Then there can be sub-codes on these ratings. The different sub-codes are:
    FV = Fantasy Violence
    V = Violence
    L = Offensive Language
    S = Sexual Content
    D = Derogatory Language
