Interesting Stuff - Super Bowl '99 Facts

The '99 Super Bowl has come and gone, and Denver once again are the champions. While many of you were just watching the game, we here at the Center for Research on the Effects of Television were analyzing the nitty gritty details of the broadcast. Our smaple consists of the last hour of the pre-game show, the whole game itself and 45 minutes of the post-game show. Out of all this we have some very interesting stastics which are all listed below.

  7. The average audience for the full game was 83.7 million people which resulted in Super Bowl XXXIII being the second-lowest rated Super Bowl since 1971. source
  8. The FOX network earned $150 million in advertising revenue from Super Bowl XXXIII. source
  9. The total number of product commercials during the actual game was 85. source
  10. Promos are ads for other programs shown at another time on the same station or network OR they can be station ID's. The total number of promos during the game was 35. source
  11. Pizza and Fast Food commercials aired more than any other product type during the pre-game show. source
  12. Alcoholic Beverages commercials aired more than any other product type during the actual game. source
  13. Automobile commercials aired more than any other product type during the post-game show. source
  14. Pizza Hut(TM) commercials aired more than any other product during the pre-game show. source

  17. The new FOX tv series "The Family Guy" had the most promos aired during Super Bowl XXXIII than any other FOX show. source
  18. There were 33 sponsorship messages that aired during the game. Sponsorships are commercials or mini-commercials that are prefaced by some kind of message referring to sponsorship or support of the program. Such as "Super Bowl XXXIII has been brought to you by company/brand and then a slogan.
  19. Progressive Auto Insurance was the sponsor of the half-time show.
  20. On the night of Super Bowl XXXIII it cost roughly $1.6 million to air a 30 second commercial. Anheuser-Busch (makers of Budweiser) paid an estimated $16 million for 5 minutes and 15 seconds of air-time during which they aired 9 commercials. source
