Doug Cross, Ph.D. - Associate Professor
Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology -
Ithaca College - Ithaca NY 14850
(607) 274-3073 cross@ithaca.edu

Background
Dr. Cross received his B.S. in Education and M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Alabama (1972, 1974) and a Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Tennessee (1978). He joined the faculty in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Ithaca College in 1984 following four years on the faculty at the University of Iowa preceded by two years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was also a clincal/research associate at the Residential Stuttering Program, University of New South Wales in Syndney Australia (1978).Curriculum Vita

Fluency Disorders
Dr. Cross' research and clinical specialization is in fluency disorders. Sample publications and professional presentations include reaction time, speech movement coordination, biofeedback, visual imagery, fluency conditioning, and perception and modification of perceived rhythm and communication pace. He is currently investigating commonalities among the neuropsychology of performance anxiety, rhythm perception/production, and development and treatment of fluency disorders. Related scholarship includes a text, A Systems Approach to Stuttering Treatment: SAST and psychometric scaling protocols for quantifying dynamic stuttering response patterns in children and adults. Dr. Cross is also developing computer-based animations and other multimedia materials for training the concepts of movement "fluidity" and "pace".

Speech Perception
Dr. Cross is also involved in studying the role of suprasgmental features of communication in the development of both human and nonhuman communication. He has presented his research on the neurophysiological correlates (auditory evoked potentials) of intonation and linguistic stress perception in children and adults.

Marine Mammal Communication
Dr. Cross expanded his interest in human communication processes to marine mammal communication. His ressearch includes investigating auditory perception and discrimination abilities in the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin and developing noninvasive procedures for recording auditory evoked potentials in dolphins and California Sea Lions.

Labs
Dr. Cross developed two laboratories located in Smiddy 324 for use by faculty and students for teaching, research, and clinical projects.

The Speech Physiology and Acoustics Lab is equiped to study neurophysiologiacal, physiological, and acoustic features of speech production and perception. The lab is currently used to study brain activity (EEG), evoked potentials (EP's), muscle activity (EMG), vocal fold movement (EGG), lip and jaw movement, respiration, and acoustics of speech.

.

Dr. Cross teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in fluency development and disorders, advanced fluency, speech science and anatomy and physiology of speech.

He also supervises students in training at the Ewing Speech and Hearing Clinic at Ithaca College and treats clients on a private basis. His fluency treatment program is based on a "Systems" model of stuttering that integrates understanding and shaping thought, arousal,"fluid" speech and appropriate adjustment strategies to enhance natural, effective communication.

Dolphin Communication Research

The Multimedia Lab provides faculty and student access to audio and video multimedia hardware and software. The lab is currently used for analog and digital audio/video analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and storage, A/V editing, dubbing, data compression, animation, and CD/DVD burning. This lab is also based around a Power Mac G5. Sample application programs include iMovie, iDVD, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Cleaner, Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Flash, and Macromedia Director

Most importantly, Dr. C is dedicated to his wife Diane, daughter Allison (a.k.a. "Bug"), and stepchildren Josh and Erica. When not shoveling snow he enjoys aviation, woodworking, golf, photography, and Margaritas in the sunshine. He is currently FAA certified as a private pilot.
