The Center for Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity welcomes two new faculty members. Dr.
Michael Caleron-Zaks and Prof. Paula Ioanide will begin teaching courses during the Fall 2008
semester.
Michael Calderon-Zaks received his Ph. D in Sociology from Binghamton University in 2008, and his BA
in American Ethnic Studies from the University of Washington. His areas of interest include historical
sociology, race in global perspective, postcolonial studies, Comparative American Ethnic Studies, and
US Latina/o Studies.
Paula Ioanide is completing her Ph.D. in History of Consciousness at the University of California,
Santa Cruz. Her work is concerned with cultural processes and political economic structures that
cultivate public consent for racial violence and disenfranchisement. Particularly, Ioanide
investigates the ways structures of affect and fantasies about race, gender and sexuality become
operative social forces in the post-civil rights era. Ioanide’s publications include
“The Story of Abner Louima: Gendered Racial Violence, Cultural Fantasies and the Ethical
Witness,” available in The Journal of Haitian Studies (Fall 2007).
