Welcome

Ithaca College Winter Session courses in Antigua and Barbuda in January 2006 included topics such as photography, ecology, and the role of sport in society. In addition, Ithaca College faculty and students provided workshops for Antiguans in health-care fields. The courses are part of Ithaca's ongoing partnership with Antigua and Barbuda.

Since 2003, more than 60 students and interns from Ithaca College and Antigua have taken short, one-credit specialized courses in communications, health sciences, and music, for example. Interns have spent extended periods of time in Antigua at HAMA Productions, The Daily Observer, and other businesses. During Summer 2005, three Antiguans spent six weeks on the Ithaca campus learning about television and radio broadcast techniques.

Courses are offered in cooperation with the government of Antigua-Barbuda, which is committed to advancing educational, economic, and social infrastructure opportunities through a revitalized democracy.

Students in "Documenting Ecosystems through Photography" focused on the environmental assessment of the near-shore ecosystems of Antigua and Barbuda, including the famous nesting colony of the magnificent frigatebird and the Barbuda warbler, a species found only on Barbuda. The January course was team-taught by John Confer, associate professor of biology and environmental studies, and Janice Levy, associate professor of photography.

Thirteen students, including nine from the campus in Ithaca and four from Antigua, spent ten days exploring mangroves, searching for avian species, and interviewing experts on Antigua and Barbuda. The final product of the students’ research and photography is this webpage devoted to their findings.
