Schedule
No class on Friday, 23 March. Instead, please attend some talk at Ed Tech day and write a couple
of paragraphs describing how the technology you learned about in the talk. Your paragraph should relate
the technology to GIS, your major, or some aspect of your life, so chose the talk appropriately. If
you are unable to attend any talks because of classes, work, etc, then go to
GIS news, and read at least two articles and write a summary (at least one page long) of the articles.
As we've talked about in class, scientists are constantly measuring the earth. Here's a
BBC article that discusses
how scientists are mapping the Moho Boundary, the area between
the Earth's crust and it's mantle.
Here's an interesting site that's all about data visualization:
many eyes.
Fix the Firefox problem! Now that we can log in, there's a firefox problem. Here's how to fix it:
- Log into Linux. Then go to menu bar at the top of the screen and choose Places->Home Folder
- Right-click some place (not on a folder) and choose "create folder". Create a folder called "tmp"
(it actually doesn't matter what you call it).
- Now go to the menu bar and choose View->Show Hidden Files
- Find the folder called .mozilla Drag this folder to the tmp folder that you created two steps ago.
- You should not be able to start firefox. Note that any bookmark that you created will be gone. Oh, well.
Here's what projections are really about: Map Projectsions, xkcd (thanks Madison!)
