History

Before architectural shrines like Ise were created, Shinto space consisted simply of loosely demarcated zones within nature--sacred trees wrapped in rope and paper talismans, like these at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, or sacred rocks, called "Iwakura," similarly bounded.
