(10/4/06)  Below are some links to optional readings mentioned in the first paper topics handout:

Yael Tamir, "Hands Off Clitoridectomy!"
Martha Nussbaum, "Double Moral Standards?"
Yael Tamir's Response to Martha Nussbaum

(Note: In Yael Tamir's response linked to above, she is responding to other writers in addition to Nussbaum.  If you wish to read what other writers wrote about Tamir's article, click here and scroll down to the links beneath the heading "Judging Other Cultures".)

(10/5/06)  Jon Mandle's Chapter 5 on challenges to human rights mentions several UN documents on human rights.  For an online collection of UN documents on human rights, click here.  (One document missing from this collection is the 1993 Vienna Declaration, mentioned by Mandle on page 76.  Click here for the text of this.)

(10/5/06) If in your first paper you are planning to discuss the "Asian Values" challenge to human rights, I would recommend you read Amartya Sen's article "Human Rights and Asian Values"; it is an important article on the subject.
